Statesmen Advance Past VSU Into GSC Baseball Championship Game

OXFORD, Ala.— No. 13 Delta State University baseball (38-12) advanced to the Gulf South Conference Baseball Championship game by holding off Valdosta State (30-21) for a 7-6 win on Tuesday at Choccolooco Park.
 
Darek Sargent finished 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs and David Herrington went 3-for-4 with two doubles.
 
Valdosta State scored two runs to cut the DSU lead to 7-6in the ninth before TJ Childree got a fly out to end the game and record his sixth save of the season

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Statesmen jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Herrington led off with a double and scored on a Sargent double and Sargent came around to score on a Hayden White single
  • Valdosta State cut the DSU lead to 2-1. Mike Christopoulus walked and scored on a Jon Jon Burkett infield single.
  • Josh Russell homered to left field in the third to give the Statesmen a 3-1 lead.
  • The Blazers got a run in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 3-2. Josh Broughton singled and after stealing second, moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a throwing error.
  • Valdosta State tied the game 3-3 in the fifth. Aaron Haughton singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch before coming home on a single by Andrew Williamson.
  • A four-run seventh broke the tie and gave the Statesmen a 7-3 lead. Brett Young singled followed by a Herrington double to put runners at second and third to start the inning. Sargent doubled home Herrington and Young. Sargent scored on a White sac-fly and Jake Barlow walked and later scored on a Russell sac-fly to right.
  • The Blazers trimmed the DSU lead to 7-4 when DJ King doubled and scored on a Christopoulus single in the bottom of the seventh.
  • The Blazers plated two runs on the board in the ninth to make it a 7-6 game. Broughton singled and scored on a DJ King triple and King scored on an Andrew Williamson single. VSU had the tying run at third and winning run at first but Childree got Burkett to fly out to right to end the game.
ON THE MOUND  
  • Patrick Hodges (1-0) worked 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts to get the win in the relief of starter Melvin Frazier.
  • Bryce Van Horn (1-1) gave up three runs on three hits with a strikeout to suffer the loss for the Blazers.
  • Childree (6) recorded the final three outs in the to register the save.
NOTEABLES
  • Sargent's two doubles were his team-leading 16th double, tying him for sixth in the GSC statistics.
  • The Statesmen had 10 hits and have double-digit hits in all five GSC tournament games, nine straight contests overall and in 13 of the last 15 games.
  • Sargent finished 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs and Herrington went 3-for-4 with two doubles.
  • The Statesmen have won the last six games in the series and two straight in GSC Tournament play.
  • The win gives Head Coach Mike Kinnison 977 career wins and needs 23 wins to reach 1,000 wins.
