Riggins Earns ABCA All-American Honors

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- Hunter Riggins added another postseason honor when he was named Second-Team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) on Monday.

The sophomore becomes the 55th Statesmen to earn ABCA All-American honors and marks the fourth consecutive year that Delta State has at least one player representing on the ABCA All-American teams.

Riggins adds the laurel to a growing list that includes NCBWA Honorable Mention All-American, First-Team All-Gulf South Conference, D2CAA and NCBWA First-Team-All-South Region after posting an 11-4 record with a 1.88 ERA, 82 strikeouts against 33 walks while allowing 43 runs, 23 earned, on 97 hits in 110.0 innings pitched. The Hernando, Miss., native led the GSC in wins, ERA and innings pitched, ranked fourth in strikeouts and third in strikeouts looking. Riggins is sprinkled throughout the NCAA Division II Baseball Statistics, ranking ninth in wins and ERA and fifth in games started (16).

The ABCA All-America team was first recognized in 1949 and now includes nine divisions: NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA Divisions I, II and III, Pacific Association Division, and high school. ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove teams were first recognized in 2007.

The ABCA, founded in 1945, is the primary professional organization for baseball coaches at the amateur level. Its over 11,000 members represent all 50 states and 25 countries. Since its initial meeting of 27 college baseball coaches in June 1945, Association membership has broadened to include eight divisions: NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA, Pacific Association Division, High School and Youth. The 75th annual ABCA Convention will be held Jan. 3-6, 2019 in Dallas, Texas.
