TIGERVILLE, S.C. – Delta State University (3-1, 2-0 GSC) scored 28-unanswered points to erase a 9-6 deficit on the way to a 34-9 win Gulf South Conference win over the University of North Greenville (2-2, 0-1 GSC) on Saturday at Younts Stadium.
The Statesmen scored a touchdown with 2:19 left in the second quarter and then added 21 points in the third quarter to pull past the Crusaders. Rico Owens rushed for two scores including a 73-yard touchdown run.
The win snapped a seven-game road losing streak dating back to Delta State's 45-35 first-round playoff win over Bowie State University on Nov. 18, 2017.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Taylor Crabtree gave the Statesmen a 3-0 lead on the opening drive of the game, connecting from 29-yards out with 4:38 gone off the first quarter clock.
- Donny Baker hit Dre' Williams for a 31-yard touchdown pass to cap a 9-play, 75-yard drive to give North Greenville a 7-3 lead with 7:17 left in the first quarter.
- Crabtree split the uprights from 24-yards away to cut the Crusader's lead to 7-6 and close the first quarter scoring.
- UNG's Johnny Worthy blocked a Statesmen punt that went out of the end zone for a safety and a 9-6 UNG lead with 7:42 left in the second quarter.
- A 40-yard rush by Deion Dampier and a nine-yard pass completion from Breck Ruddick to Cam Shelton on fourth-down and two at the UNG 17 to set the Statesmen's next score. Rico Owens plunged in to the end zone to finish an 8-play, 80-yard to give the Green-and-White a 13-9 lead with 2:49 remaining in the second quarter.
- The Green-and-White scored 21 points in the third quarter to take a 34-9 lead into the fourth quarter.
- Tim Irving's 28-yard interception set up a Ruddick two-yard run make the score 20-9 just 20 seconds into the second half.
- After the Statesmen defense forced a three-and-out on UNG's ensuing possession, Rico Owens sprinted to the end zone for a 73-yard touchdown and a 27-9 lead at the 13:08 mark of the third quarter.
- L.J. Hawkins caught a nine-yard scoring strike from Ruddick ended a 9-play, 66-yard drive with 5:07 to go in the third quarter.
OFFENSIVE NOTEABLES:
- Delta State totaled 438 yards on offense, including 211 yards through the air.
- The Statesmen averaged 6.4 yards per rush, finishing with 224 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Rico Owens led the Statesmen rushing attack with 99 yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns.
- Deion Dampier finished with 86 yards on 11 attempts, including a 40-yard scamper.
- Ruddick completed 23-of-30 pass for 198 yards and a touchdown and rushed seven times for 27 yards and a score.
- Owens 73-yard touchdown run was the first rush over 70 yards since a Trevar Deed 81-yard run against North Alabama on Oct. 15, 2009.
- Freshman Jay Brown completed 2-of-3 passes for 13 yards seeing his first action as a Statesmen.
DEFENSIVE NOTEABLES:
- Delta State limited UNG to 179 yards of total offense, 100 on the ground and 79 in the air. The Statesmen defense is yielding a GSC-best 74.75 yards per game on the ground through four games.
- The Statesmen defense notched three sacks for a GSC leading 12 sacks this season. Zane Samuel and Eric Sadler notched one sack apiece while Marvin Terry and Kahlil Johnson combined on another sack.
- Irvin's third quarter interception gave the Statesmen kept the Statsemen tied with Valdosta State atop the GSC with six-interceptions
- Delta State's produced 10-points two North Greenville turnovers.
- Vada King led the Statesmen with 5 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a quarterback hurry.
- Junior Falk had four tackles and three pass break ups while Irving finished with three tackles and an interception.
SPECIAL TEAMS NOTEABLES:
- Crabtree made 2-for-2 field goal attempts and made four PATs to account for 10 of the Statesmen 34 points.
- The senior from Pascagoula, Miss., has connected on 9-of-12 field goals and 10-of-10 PAT's this season for 38-points, leading the GSC in field goals made and points scored kicking.
- Sam Barge punted four times for 39.8 yards with a long of 52 yards and two punts downed inside the UNG 20.
