CLEVELAND, Miss. - Each week, the Delta State University Office of Athletics Communications will preview the upcoming week of DSU Athletics with "This Week in Delta State Sports."

MEN'S GOLF
  • Delta State plays its final tournament of the fall season on Monday, Oct. 26 and Tuesday, Oct. 26 as the Statesmen visit the Chattahoochee Golf Club in Gainesville, Ga. 
  • Last week, the Statesmen turned in a second place finish last week at the Matt Dyas Invitational with a 16-over-301.
  • Mitchell Fifer led the way for the Green and White with a two-over-218, while four Statesmen finished in the tournament's top 12 last week; Fifer (tied for fourth) and Jake Kight (tied for seventh), Landon Cottrell (tied for 10th) and Landon Carner (tied for 12th). 
  • The Statesmen have posted a first or second place finish in six of their last seven tournaments dating back to the 2019-20 season.
  •  Fifer,  Kight,  Cottrell, Carner and Wilile Hammond make up the Statesmen top five this week.

MEN'S SWIMMING
  • The Statesmen swimming team gets its 2020-21 campaign underway with a road trip to Rolla, Mo. to take on Missouri S&T.
  • Delta State comes off last year's NCAA National Championships that were canceled due to the coronavirus. 
  • The Green & White tallied 70 points after the first day of the championships last season, which was good for second place after the first night of the championships. 
  • Emanuel Fava won the school's second National Championship last year, winning the title in the 200 individual medley. Fava gave DSU its 10th national title and joined Justin Whitaker as the school's lone swimming and diving national champions.

CROSS COUNTRY
  • Delta State University women's cross country coach Doug Pinkerton notched his 100th race at the helm of the program two weeks ago, and the Lady Statesmen raced to an eighth place finish in a predominately Division I field at the Little Rock Open on Oct. 17, 2020.
  • Freshman Bailey Pounds led the Lady Statesmen for the third consecutive meet, clocking a 22:09.1 to take home a 47th place finish.
  • Sydney Roberts was Delta State's second finisher in 53rd with a time of 22:43.6.
  • The Lady Statesmen look to build on an 11th place finish at last year's GSC Championships.
