Lady Statesmen Split Opening Games of 2020 Season

GULF SHORES, AL. –  The Delta State Lady Statesmen Softball team split the opening day of the 2020 season on Saturday evening. DSU lost the opening game of the year to Rollins College 1-0 before rebounding and beating Rogers State in the nightcap 8-7. It is the second year uin a row where the Lady Statesmen split the opening day of the Gulf Shores Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
GAME 1
  • Neither team could get much offense going until the fourth. Both pitchers had impressive starts.
  • Only one run was scored when Rollins' Talia Kentof flew out to left field advancing Chelsea Peac home.
  • Rollins went on to defeat DSU 1-0.
  • 15 Lady Statesmen struck out in game one.
GAME 2
  • Delta State struck first when they scored two runs I the second inning. Jenny Griggers scored the first run off an error by the first baseman. The Lady Statesmen scored their second run off a single by Callie Neman.
  • Rogers answered back in the third inning. A sacrifice fly by D. Day drove in a run cutting the Lady Statesmen lead to 2-1.
  • Waggnor's RBI single to middle field in the bottom of the fourth tied the game at two apiece.
  • The Lady Statesmen scored two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Mary Sweatt drove in the first run with a single through right field. Haley Simpson scored the second run off a pass ball. 
  • DSU scored again in the sixth after Olivia Dick's drove in run with a single through the left side to extend the Lady Statesmen's lead to 6-2.
  • Day scored a runoff a fielder's choice in the sixth inning to cut the DSU lead to 6-3.
  • DSU scored two more runs in the seventh inning. The Lady Statesmen scored off two singles from Newman and Dick. The Lady Statesmen went into the bottom of the seventh leading 8-3.
  • Rogers scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Lady Statesmen would hold on to win by one run, 8-7.
 
 
 
ON THE MOUND: GM 1
  • Olivia Burns (0-1) pitched a complete game for DSU giving up one run off six hits through seven innings of work.
  • Ali Shenefield (1-0) also threw a complete game striking out 15 batters and giving up only one hit.
GM 2
  • Mari Alex Sandriidge (1-0) gave up seven runs off eight hits through seven innings of work. Sandridge also struck out three batters.
  • M. Hillman (0-1) also pitched a complete game. Hillman gave up eight runs off 11 hits while striking out four batters
  • NOTEABLES:
  • Haley Simpson got the only hit for the Statesmen in game one.
  • Olivia Dick and Callie Newman each had a multiple hit game for DSU. Dick had three hits in five at bats while Newman had three hits and one walk in four at bats. Dick also hat two RBIs in the game.
 
Up Next:
•  The Lady Statesmen will take on Nova South Easten and Tuskegee in a double header starting at 9 am on Sunday, February 2nd.
