HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- The Delta State University Diamond Statesmen pounded out 14 hits and got seven strong innings from
Cooper Brune on the mound en route to an 8-3 win in game two of a doubleheader against the University of Alabama in Huntsville as the two teams split the first day of the series on the opening weekend of Gulf South Conference Play.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GM 1:
- Delta State fell behind 2-0 in the third inning as Alabama-Huntsville's Tyler McCown tripled down the right field line to bring in two runs.
- UAH made it 3-0 in the same inning on a John Trousdale RBI groundout.
- Jared Cramer walked with one out in the fourth and came around to score on a Patrick Hodges RBI single to center to get themselves on the board.
- The Chargers got the run back in the bottom of the fourth, as Will Acuff singled to score Drake Hollingsworth and make it 4-1.
- The Statesmen were quiet until the top of the eighth frame, when Darek Sargent hit a line-drive home run to left field to pull DSU within a pair of runs, 4-2.
- Josh Smeltzer got hit by a pitch in the top of the ninth inning, but UAH's Parker Warren got a strikeout and a flyout to end the game.
ON THE MOUND | GM 1:
- DSU starter Hunter Riggins worked 6.2 innings and took the loss. He allowed seven hits and three earned runs, walked three and struck out six.
- Wesley Grantham came in for his first action of the season and worked 1.1 scoreless frames. He also had two strikeouts.
- Tyler Self went 5.2 innings and allowed just one run on nine hits while striking out three and walking three.
HOW IT HAPPENED | GM 2:
- A leadoff single by Garrett Bodine and an RBI single from Trousdale to bring him home made it 1-0 UAH in the bottom of the first inning of game two.
- The Statesmen took the lead in the third inning with a three spot. Darek Sargent and Chad Ragland each singled with one out and Hayden White reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Jared Cramer then struck out but reached first on a wild pitch to score Sargent and tie the game 1-1. Wyatt Pratt followed with a two-RBI single to make it 3-1.
- UAH added a run in the home half to pull within a run, 3-2, after three innings.
- DSU added another in the fourth. Jake Barlow led off the frame with a double, Will Myers laid down a sac bunt to move him to third, and Sargent's sac fly brought him home as DSU took a 4-2 advantage.
- The Statesmen added a solo home run from Jared Cramer, his second of the year, a two-RBI single by Myers, and a Chad Ragland RBI single to extend the lead to 8-2 after five innings.
- The Chargers added a run in the sixth inning, but Cooper Brune set UAH down in order in the seventh to end the game.
ON THE MOUND | GM 2:
- Cooper Brune (1-0) logged a complete game to pickup his first win, tossing seven strong innings and scattering six hits and three runs. He added six strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
NOTABLES:
- Sargent went 5-for-7 with a solo homer, drove in two runs and scored two runs in the doubleheader.
- Ragland went 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run in game two.
- Pratt was a combined 5-for-9 with 2 RBI and a run.
- Five different Statesmen had multi-hit games between game one and game two, while Pratt and Sargent had multi-hit games in both contests.
