Cold Shooting Dooms Lady Statesmen At Union

JACKSON, Tenn. -- The Delta State University women's basketball team shot just 23 percent from the field in the first half and could not overcome the slow start as they fell to Union University 80-66.

DSU was just 5-for-19 from the field in the first quarter and went just 3-for-16 in the second as Delta State had their two-game winning streak snapped.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Union jumped in front quickly, drilling its first three attempts from three-point territory as they built a 13-3 lead at the 6:16 mark of the first quarter. 
  • The Lady Bulldogs went 9-for-17 from the field in the first quarter and led 24-11 after the opening ten minutes of the play. 
  • Union used another quick start, a 9-0 run in the first seven minutes of the second to extend its lead to 33-11 as Delta State opened up just 5-for-29 from the field.
  • Delta State trailed 41-18 at the half, with Union doubling up the Lady Statesmen from the field (16 made shots to DSU's eight).
  • Shaniyah Buford knocked down a pair of three-point shots to cut the lead to 17, and Delta State went to the 4th quarter trailing 56-39. 
  • T'kyra Hicks added another three as DSU cut it to 14, but another 9-0 Union run pushed the lead out to 67-44 with 7:03 left in the game. 
  • The Lady Statesmen outscored Union 15-10 over the final four minutes, but could not get any closer than that as the Lady Bulldogs grabbed their 13th GSC win.

TURNING POINT:
  • Delta State made just five shots in the first 17 minutes of the contest and could not recover. 

STAT OF THE GAME:
  • Delta State was 24-for-76 from the field in the game, registering jut a 31-percent clip from the field. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Quantesha Patterson posted her 14th double-double of the campaign with 23 points and 14 rebounds.
  • Patterson also pulled down nine offensive rebounds, the fourth time she has had nine or more offensive rebounds in a game. 
  • Hicks scored 10 points, just one point away from setting a career-high.
  • Johnson was the only other scorer for DSU to have 10 points.
  • Union was led by Shanique Lucas with 21 points while Jada Smith added 18 points.
