CLEVELAND, Miss. -- The Delta State University softball team snapped a six-game losing streak on Tuesday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of the University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms.
Olivia Burns dominated both games in the circle, earning two wins and striking out a combined 16 batters in the sweep. DSU won game one by a final of 3-1 and grabbed its second shutout of the season in game two 9-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME 1
- The Lady Statesmen scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the third.
- Callie Newman's RBI single up the middle plated the first run for the Green-and-White.
- Julie Scheuermann drove in the second run with a single to left field.
- Alyssa Gover reached on a fielder's choice, bringing home Newman to make it 3-0.
- UAM plated one in the top of the fifth thanks to Haley Cornell's RBI single to right field, but it was too little too late for UAM.
GAME 2
- The Lady Statesmen were quick to get on the board, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first.
- Kailyn Lofton scored the first run thanks to a wild pitch, and a Jenny Griggers' double to right field plated the second run.
- Griggers later scored the third run after a throwing error by the UAM catcher Sydney Webster.
- Olivia Burns scored the fourth run on a throw down and Haley Simpson's single to the shortstop plated the final run of the inning for the Green-and-White.
- Lofton scored her second run of the game off another wild pitch as part of a four run second frame for DSU.
- Griggers plated the second run with an RBI groundout and Olivia Burns added another with an RBI double.
- Burns later scored the final run of the contest for DSU on a fielding error by the Cotton Blossoms to make it 9-0.
ON THE MOUND:
GM 1
- Olivia Burns (3-10) pitched a complete game. Burns gave up one run on four hits while striking out 11 in her first win of the day.
- Kaylee Freeman (2-2) received the loss for UAM. Freeman three runs on four hits through six innings in her second loss of the season.
GM 2
- Olivia Burns (4-10) pitched another complete game, this time tossing a shutout. Burns only allowed one hit while striking out six.
- Raegyn Parrish (1-3) took the loss in game two. Parrish allowed nine runs on five hits in two innings.
- Alexis Pevehouse relieved Parrish in the bottom of the third and allowed zero hits in two innings of relief.
NOTABLES
- In game one, Olivia Burns struck out a season and career-high 11 batters.
- Burns took her first at bats of the season in game two. She went 1-2 scoring two runs and driving in another. Burns also recorded a walk and a stolen base.
- Lofton scored twice on two wild pitches.
