Lady Statesmen Fall to Union 69-67 in GSC Title Game

HOMEWOOD Ala. -- The Delta State University women's basketball team got a shot attempt in the games closing seconds that would have forced overtime, but it rimmed out as Union (Tenn.) University held on for a 69-67 win over the Lady Statesmen in the 2019-20 Gulf South Conference basketball championship game on Sunday afternoon at the Pete Hanna Center.

Quantesha Patterson scored 28 points and 16 rebounds and Nia Johnson had 24 points as both ladies earned GSC All-Tournament honors.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Union jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead following baskets by Jaelencia Williams and Shanique Lucas just under one minute into the first quarter.
  • Delta State responded with a 9-2 run to build a 9-6 lead after a 3-pointer and a jumper by Nia Johnson with 6:11 to go in the opening quarter.
  • A Zyaire Ewing layup put the Lady Statesmen ahead 11-10 at the first media time out with 4:54 left in the frame. 
  • Jacie Higgins scored five points as the Bulldogs went on a 7-2 run to take a 22-17 lead at the end of the opening period.
  • A 3-pointer by Ernesha Chatman and a Patterson jump shot aided a 5-0 run to start the second quarter and knot the game, 22-22.
  • Leah Cauble's three put UU back up 25-22 before a layup and free throw by Ewing tied the game 25-25 with 5:44 remaining in the second quarter.
  • Paterson scored the next five points for the Lady Statesmen, including a 3-point play that put DSU 30-29 at the 3:45 mark.
  • A Johnson jumper followed by a 3-point play gave the Lady Statesmen a 37-33 with 1:29 to play in the second quarter.
  • Williams made a short jumper in the lane as DSU carried a 37-35 advantage into halftime.
  • Nine of the Lady Statesmen's 23 rebounds in the first half were collected on the offensive glass. DSU held a 23-18 edge on the boards.
  • Union opened the second half with an 8-0 run to take a 43-39 lead following a Jada Smith basket with 7:01 left.
  • Kirstin Brown made two of free throws and Johnson connected on a jumper in the lane to pull the Lady Statesmen to within 43-41 at the 5:34 mark of the third quarter.
  • A 5-0 DSU run tied the game at 48 after two free throws by Patterson with 2:08 to play in the third quarter.
  • Smith hit a jump shot with 23 seconds left as Union held a 55-52 lead going into the final quarter.
  • The Bulldogs opened up a 63-55 lead when Higgins connected on a 3-pointer with 5:58 to play in the fourth quarter.
  • A Johnson fastbreak basket and two free throws cut the Union advantage to 63-59 at the 4:10 mark of the final quarter.
  • Patterson made a layup to answer a Williams basket to trim the lead to 65-63 with 2:18 left.
  • Johnson hit two free throws to answer a Smith jump shot to trail 67-65 with 1:30 showing on the game clock.
  • Trailing 69-65, Patterson got an offensive rebound and put-back to cut the UU lead to 69-67 with 5.6 seconds left.
  • Higgins missed two free throws with 3.6 seconds left to keep the Union lead at 69-67 and gave the Lady Statesmen one final shot.
  • A Johnson jumper, which would have sent the game to overtime, rimmed out on as time expired to seal the game for Union.  
TURNING POINT
  • Union's 8-0 run to start the third quarter forced the Lady Statesmen to fight from behind the rest of the way.
STAT OF THE GAME
  • Delta State held a 43-35 advantage on the boards while outscoring Union 40-32 in the paint.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Patterson scored 28 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to register her 20th double-double of the season.
  • Johnson finished with 24 points and five assists.
  • Ewing had seven points and six rebounds spending much of the game in foul trouble.
  • Williams led Union with 20 points and 12 rebounds followed by Smith with 18 points and Lucas with 11 points.
  • Johnson and Patterson earned GSC All-Tournament honors.
