Big Second Half by Christian Brothers Dooms Statesmen

MEMPHIS -- Christian Brothers University shot 58 percent from the floor, while the Delta State University men's basketball team went 1-for-17 from three-point territory as the Bucs outscored the Statesmen 34-28 in the second half en route to a 65-50 win over DSU on Saturday afternoon at Canale Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A Jaylen Lemons layup capped a 15-9 Statesmen run to the 9:46 mark of the first half. 
  • CBU responded with a 6-0 spurt to tie the game at 15-15, and then used a 13-8 run capped by an Aiden Ruthsatz layup put CBu up 28-23 with 2:29.
  • Caleb Henry, earning his first start of the year, scored a layup to trim the CBU lead to 28-25 with 2:05 left to go in the half. 
  • Jesse Payne responded with a three-point bucket to run the CBU lead to six, and that's where it stood at the intermission as the Bucs led 31-25 at the half. 
  • The Bucs doubled up the Statesmen 8-4 in the opening minutes if the second half to take a 39-29 lead with 16:50 to play.
  • A Michael Motley layup with 16:34 left cut the margin to eight, at 39-31, but Nick Deifel responded with a three-pointer from the top of the key to put CBU up 11 with 16:15 to go. 
  • Maalik Cartwright hit a free throw to pull DSU back within ten with 15:49 left, but CBU responded with an 18-9 run capped by a Nick Deifel baseline jumper to give the Bucs their largest lead of the night at 60-40 with 4:16 left to put the game away.

TURNING POINT

  • Delta State cut the CBU under 10 points twice in the middle stages of the second half, but an 18-9 run put the game away for CBU.

STAT OF THE GAME

  • The Statesmen went 1-for-17 from the three-point line for the contest. 

UP NEXT

The Statesmen are set to travel to Clinton, Miss. to take Mississippi College on Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 6:30 p.m.
