Lady Statesmen Blank West Georgia for Third Straight Shutout

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University women's soccer team talied two second half goals to defeat the University of West Georgia 2-0 on Friday afternoon at Delta Field. It was the third straight shutout win for the Lady Statesmen.
 
Carra Hymel scored her first goal of the season as did Anna Whitehead on a penalty kick. With the win, DSU improved their record to 6-5 after starting the season 0-4.
 
After losing 11 straight games to UWG, the Lady Statesmen have now won the last two meetings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UWG had an early shot that went just wide in the opening minute.
  • Mia Ramirez had the first shot for DSU but was off target..
  • UWG kept up the pressure early and forced Amanda Hilliard to make a couple of saves in the first half. 
  • In the 52nd minute, on the second shot of the game for DSU, Hymel received a pass from Lavinia Horning and it slotted home the opening goal.
  • The Lady Statesmen kept the pressure on the Wolves with shots from Ilse Holtkamp, Isabella Wade, Blanca Osorio, and Nicola Hauk forcing UWG to make several key saves.
  • In the 73rd minute, Horning was fouled in the box and Whitehead converted the penalty kick to give DSU the 2-0 lead.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • DSU had nine shots to UWG's five. Delta State had three shots on target while the Wolves had two
  • Both teams had ten fouls in the game with two yellow cards for UWG and one for DSU.
  • Hilliard has now gone 276 minutes without conceding a goal.
  • This was only the second time in school history DSU has won three straight shutout games.
  • The first time DSU had three straight shutout wins was in 2008 when DSU beat Robert Morris-Springfield, Robert Morris-Lake County, and Central Baptist.
