Lady Statesmen Rally to Beat West Georgia

VICKSBURG, Miss. -- For the second straight day, the Delta State University softball team used a walk off opportunity to complete a comeback and win a game against the University of West Georgia. In the series finale, the Lady Statesmen used a walk to score Raegan Stafford to defeat the Wolves in a 7-6 game at the Sports Force Park in Vicksburg.

How It Happened:

  • UWG took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first after a double to left field by Kayla Hughes.
  • In the top of the fourth, the Wolves would extend their lead to 4-0. The Wolves started off the inning with a single to center field by Hughes. Then they ended the inning with a single by Alley Taylor to left field.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, DSU would tack on their first run of the game with a single by Jenny Griggers scoring Stafford to make it 4-1.
  • The Lady Statesmen would cut UWG's lead to one 4-3 in the bottom of sixth. Kailyn Lofton singled to right center, scoring Stafford to start the rally for the Green and White. Jaclyn Deason closed out the inning with a ground out to Taylor giving Taylor Picou a clear path to the plate.
  • In the top of the seventh, with two out, Madison Slappey tripled to center field to extend the lead to 5-3.
  • Then in the bottom of the seventh, the Lady Statesmen cut the  Wolves lead back down to one at 5-4. With one out and a single from Stafford, it brought home Alyssa Gover to start the rally. Then a  sac fly from Griggers to right field would bring in the tying run to end the inning at 5-5.
  • The Wolves would score with two outs in the top of the eighth. Maddie Gorsuch would single to left field for UWG giving them the lead 6-5.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, with two outs, Lofton would score on a wild pitch to tie the game at 6-6.
  • Then to win it with the bases loaded, Morgan Goree would walk Stafford to give DSU the 7-6 victory.

In the Circle:

  • Olivia Burns (2-4) got the win for Delta State. Burns gave up two runs on five hits through four and a third innings.
  • Brookelyn Sweeney got the start for the Lady Statesmen. Sweeney allowed one run off of three hits through one and two-thirds innings.
  • Lacey Coats would come in to relieve Sweeney. Coats gave up three runs off five hits in two innings.
  • Morgan Goree (0-2) took the loss for West Georgia. Goree gave up four runs on two hits through one and two thirds innings.
  • Kya Draper got the start for the Wolves. Draper gave up one run off four hits through three innings of work.
  • Macy Ann McKnight would relieve Draper. McKnight gave up two runs off of one hit in three innings of work.

NOTABLES

  • Stafford went 2-for-3 and had two RBI's on the day. Stafford's walk in the bottom of the 8th would seal the game for the Green and White.
