Bourgoyne-Charles Earns 300th Career Win In Doubleheader Split

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- Head coach Casey Bourgoyne-Charles picked up her 300th career victory in a 6-5 win in game two as thw Delta State University softball team split a Saturday afternoon doubleheader with the University of West Alabama at University Field.

The Lady Statesmen dropped game one 14-2 before hanging on to a 6-5 victory in game two.

GAME 1: 

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • UWA took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third after Abby McKee grounded out to the shortstop.
  • In the top of the fourth, Presley Witt reached on a fielder's choice scoring LP Trammell, which extended the Tigers lead 2-0.
  • In the top of the fifth, the Tigers scored three runs to lengthen their lead to 5-0. Cassie Matlock hit a two run home-run to left center and then Chrissy Tubbs singled to left field scoring Lexy House closing out the inning.
  • In the top of the sixth, Matlock scored on a throwing error by Taylor Picou, which stretched the UWA lead 8-0.
  • Lady Statesmen notched on their only two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Sara Lawrence scored on a throwing error by Kendall Johnson. A single by Jenny Griggers went to right field which scored Summer Cryder.
  • UWA sealed the game with six runs in the top of the seventh 14-2. Matlock scored the first two as she singled to left field bringing in Johnson and Tubbs. Trammell turned a double to a triple on a bad throw. Coots closed out the inning with a home-run to left field.
IN THE CIRCLE
  • Olivia Burns (2-5) took the loss for Delta State. Burns gave up six hits and four runs in four and two thirds' innings.
  • Brookelyn Sweeney would come in to relieve Burns. Sweeney gave up 10 runs off nine hits in two and one third inning of work.
  • Kacy Noland (3-2) would earn the win for the Tigers. Noland gave up five hits and two runs in seven innings of work.
NOTABLES (GM1)
  • Bloesch went one-for-one in the game in a pinch hit at bat for the Green and White.
GAME 2

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Tigers took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Peyton Coots scored after a throwing error by Cryder.
  • The Lady Statesmen would tie the game in the bottom of the first 1-1. Raegan Stafford scored on a SAC-Fly from  Lofton.
  • In the top of the third, West Alabama would tack on two runs to take back the lead 3-1. Matlock singled to third scoring Johnaon. Trammell doubled down the left field line which scored Matlock.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Statesmen tallied five runs to take the 6-3 lead. Jenny Griggers scored on a single by Lofton to start the inning. Alyssa Branyan doubled down the left field line which scored Hope Harbin and Lofton. Bloesch and Lawrence scored on a double down the left field line as well by Cryder.
  • West Alabama cut the Lady Statesmen lead to one in the top of the fifth. Coots doubled down the left field line which scored Johnson. Tubbs rounded out the inning as she scored on a wild pitch.
  • Harbin made a running grab in the top of the seventh right in front of the wall to end the game.
IN THE CIRCLE
  • Lacey Coats (7-2) started and earned a complete game win for the Green and White. She gave up seven hits and five runs in seven innings of work.
  • Caleigh Wallace (0-1) took the loss for West Alabama. Wallace gave up four runs off six hits in three and a one third innings.
  • Hannah Mynard closed the game out for UWA. Mynard gave up two runs off of four hits in two and two thirds' innings of work.
NOTABLES (GM 2)
  • Coach Casey Bourgoyne-Charles earned her 300th career win.
  • Griggers went 3-for-3 in game two.
  • Branyan went 1-for-1 in game two.
