Lady Statesmen Drop Heartbreaker to Rival MC in Overtime

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- The No. 20 Delta State University women's soccer team lost a 2-1 heartbreaker on a golden goal by No. 12 Mississippi College three minutes into overtime on Thursday at Parker Field-McCool Stadium.
 
Despite the loss, the Lady Statesmen secured the GSC West Division's No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in next week's Gulf South Conference Spring Championship tournament. Delta State will play an opponent to be determined on Saturday, March 21 at Parker Field-McCool Stadium. 
 
Kaylee Foster scored a goal on a free kick from 22 yards out in the 93rd minute to give the Lady Choctaws win.

 HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Nicola Hauk gave the Lady Statesmen a 1-0 lead off a free kick in the 21st minute.
  • Emma Young scored off a corner kick from Avery Hederman to knot the game 1-1 in the 32nd minute.
  • Delta State's only other scoring chance came when Niamh Jestin's shot was turned away by MC goalkeeper Ebba Elweroth in the 33rd minute. 
  • Mississippi College held a 4-3 advantage in shots while the Lady Statesmen had a 2-1 edge in shots on goal in the first half.
  • Delta State's had the first scoring chance of the second half in the 49th minute, when Rylee McGee's shot was saved by Elweroth.
  • The next scoring opportunity came when a Mia Rameriez shot was saved in the 63rd minute. 
  • Foster scored a goal on a free kick from 22 yards out in the 93rd minute to give the Lady Choctaws win. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
  • Rameriez and Diana Okechukwu led the Lady Statesmen with three shots apiece.
  • Hauk finished with a goal on two shots.
  • Emma Young's four shots led MC followed by Avery and Erin Hederman each with three shots.
