CLEVELAND, Miss. -- A early first half goal from
Niamh Jestin proved to be the difference as the Delta State University women's soccer team won their first ever postseason game 1-0 over the defending Gulf South Conference champion the University of Montevallo on Sunday afternoon at Parker Field-McCool Stadium.
The Lady Statesmen defeated the Falcons in the quarterfinals of the Gulf South Conference Spring Championship, marking just the second time that Delta State has defeated Montevallo in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Montevallo had the first opportunity of the ball game with a corner kick in the 10th minute but DSU turned it away.
- Then in the 11th minute, DSU executed a perfect counter attack and Mia Ramirez slotted a pass to Niamh Jestin who put it in the back of the net to give Delta State a 1-0 lead.
- Rainey Niles had another shot three minutes later, but it was wide.
- The Falcons then responded with seven shots in the last 20 minutes of the first half. Amanda Hilliard saved three and the other four went wide.
- Carra Hymel picked up a yellow card in the 57th minute.
- Only Jennifer Lopez and Diana Okechukwu managed to take shots for Delta State in the second half, and both of the shots went wide.
- Every time UM had an opportunity in the last ten minutes, the DSU defense was able to clear the ball out of the penalty box.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- UM out shot DSU 10-5.
- The Falcons had five shots on target and the Lady Statesmen had three.
- Hilliard had four saves in the win.
- There were a combined 11 fouls in the game.
- DSU had one yellow card.
- Jestin scored her first career goal while Ramirez had her third assist of the season.
