No. 8 Lee (Tenn.) Sweeps Twinbill From Diamond Statesmen

CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- The Delta State University baseball team (6-9, 5-9 GSC) suffered a pair of one-run defeats at the hands of the No. 8 Lee (Tenn.) University Flames (13-2, 12-1 GSC) on Saturday afternoon at Lee Carpenter Stadium at Olympic Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)
  • Lee jumped on top 2-0 on a Ryan Beamish two-run home run with two outs in the first inning.
  • Kirkland Trahan tied the game in the second with a two-run home run with Hayden White on base after a infield single. 
  • Lee scored a run in the fourth and one in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Dylan Standifer reached on a fielder's choice and came home on a fielding error in the fourth. Thomas Zazarro led off the fifth with a double and came home on a Alan Smith double. 
  • The Statesmen loaded the bases in the sixth with one out but only managed one run to trim the deficit to 4-3. Josh Smeltzer singled and scored on a Chad Ragland single. 
  • Delta State loaded the bases in the eighth with one out only to have Lee turn a double play to end the threat. 
ON THE MOUND (GM 1)
  • Hunter Riggins (1-3) allowed four runs, three earned, on nine hits with three strikeouts in nine innings pitched to take the loss for the Statesmen.
  • Logan Workman (2-0) worked five innings, giving up two runs on four hits with eight strikeouts to earn the win for Lee. 
  • Andy Rivera (3) tossed 1.2 innings with a strikeout to close the game and earn the save. 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)
  • The Green-and-White took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Ragland walked and scored on a Josh Smeltzer doubled and Trahan walked and scored on a Jake Barlow sac-fly. 
  • Lee scored a run in the third and fourth innings to tie the game. Brycen Jewell struck out but reached first on wild pitch before scoring on a Smith sac-fly to center field in the third. 
  • Landon Silver tied the game 2-2 with a solo home run with two outs in the fourth.
ON THE MOUND (GM 2)
  • TJ Childree (0-1) took the loss for the Statesmen, allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts.
  • Chandler Ring (2-0) posted seven strikeouts against two walks and did not yield a hit in five scoreless relief innings. 
  • DSU starter Christian Day recorded seven strikeouts while giving up two runs on six hits. 
  • Lee starter Seth Konkel gave up two runs on four this with four strikeouts and five walks. 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • White went 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored and Shows went 2-for-3 in game one.
  • Trahan's home run in the second was his fourth of the year, tying him for the team lead with White and Jake Barlow.
  • The Trahan home run was the GSC leading 22nd of the season for the Statesmen.
  • Smith, Standifer and Landon Silver each had two hits to lead Lee in game one.
  • The Statesmen left 10 runners on base, five in scoring position in game one.
  • Riggins tossed a season-high nine innings, and his 96 pitches were the second most pitches this season.
  • Smith and Colton Yeager collected two hits apiece to lead the Flames in game two. 
  • White, Smeltzer, Barlow, and Shows accounted for DSU's four hits in game two.
  • Delta State fell to 0-2 in extra inning games this season.
