Turnovers Costly As Valdosta State Downs DSU in GSC Quarterfinals

Box Score VALDOSTA, Ga. -- Valdosta State University used a 25-9 run over the final eight minutes of the first half and defeated the Delta State University men's basketball team 88-69 in the Gulf South Conference Quarterfinals on Tuesday night at The Complex in Valdosta, Ga.

Maalik Cartwright had his third double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Airen Brooks also turned in 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Green and White.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kelen Dietrich hit the opening three of the ball game 25 seconds into the contest.
  • Maalik Cartwright then scooped a layup in to give DSU the early lead.
  • Airen Brooks and Cartwright each hit a shot to give DSU their largest lead of the game at 10-5.
  • The Blazers then answered with a 7-2 run off of a couple of Imoras Agee three's to tie it at 12-12 with 14 minutes left in the first period.
  • The two teams then traded the lead four times before a three from Cam Hamilton for VSU started a 13-4 run to pull ahead 40-25.
  • A full court press from Valdosta State forced five turnovers in the last three minutes to lead 49-30 at the break.
  • Right out of the halftime break, Brooks and Keyshaun Street hit  three-point shots to pull DSU back to 51-40 with 16:22 left in the game.
  • VSU answered right back with three of their own three-pointers to push it back out to 60-45 with 11 minutes left in the game.
  • The two teams then traded buckets in the next eight minutes with VSU keeping the lead at 15 points.
  • Cam Hamilton made his sixth three point shot to make it 82-63 with 3:39 on the clock.
  • Michael Motley made two layups at the end of the game to end with 11 points.
TURNING POINT
  • After DSU made it 24-21, VSU outscored DSU 25-9 over the last eight minutes of the first half to lead 49-30 at the break.  
STAT OF THE GAME
  • VSU was 15-33 from the three point line while DSU was 8-20.
  • DSU outrebounded VSU 46-29.
  • The Statesmen committed 20 turnovers to just seven for the Blazers.
