Lady Statesmen Drop Heartbreaker to Lee on Penalty Kicks

HOOVER, Ala. -- The Delta State University Lady Statesmen soccer team took the No. 2 ranked Lee University Lady Flames to the wire on Saturday afternoon before falling in penalty kicks (3-5).

Neither team was able to score in regulation as the Lady Statesmen went to penalty kicks for the first time in school history. It was the furthest DSU has ever gone in a Gulf South Conference tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lee had the first shot just 90 seconds in the game, but the shot went high.
  • A minute later, Amanda Hilliard had her first save of the contest.
  • In the 13th minute, Kelsey Yoder had a penalty kick for Lee, but Hilliard made the stop.
  • Tasha Toms took the first shot for the Lady Statesmen in the 35th minute but it was saved by Lee.
  • The Lady Flames brought the pressure early in the second half but all their shots went wide.
  • Diana Okechukwu had an opportunity in the 56th minute but it was saved.
  • Then in the 61st minute, Okechukwu had a breakaway opportunity, but her shot went wide.
  • Lee had two very close shots in the 84th and 85th minute but they were both saved by Hilliard.
  • The Lady Flames had the last opportunity of regulation in the 87th minute, but it went high.
  • In the first overtime, both team had a couple of shots that went wide.
  • Anna Whitehead had an early shot in the second overtime but it was saved by the Lady Flames.
  • Ruth Edrington earned a yellow card for Lee in the 104th minute.
  • In the penalty shootout, Tasha Toms, Okechukwu, and Whitehead all converted their penalty shots.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Lee out shot DSU 12-5, but the Lady Statesmen had three shots on target to Lee's two.
