Long Ball Dooms Lady Statesmen in Doubleheader Loss to Harding

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team dropped the doubleheader to the Lady Bison of Harding University.

Harding hit six home runs in the two games matching their season total, while Summer Cryder drove in five runs in game two which was a season-high for the Lady Statesmen.

GAME 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The  Lady Bison took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Nichole Shano hit a double to center field to score Makenzie Chappell.
  • In the top of the third, Hanna Jones hit a  solo homerun to give Harding a 2-0 lead.  
  • The fourth saw an Amanda Fields's two-run homerun to extend their lead to 4-0.
  • In the top of the fifth, Chappell would score on a error. Ashton Bryce would then follow that up with a two-run home run extending Harding's lead to 7-0.
  • In the top of the sixth, the Lady Bison clinched the 11-0 win over the Lady Statesmen. To start the inning, Briley Feringa hit a solo homerun to center field. That was followed by Jones scoring on a fielding error by Kailyn Lofton. To end the inning, Bryce doubled to right-center which scored Shano and Cabana.
IN THE CIRCLE
  • Lacey Coats (13-3) started and took the loss for the Green and White. Coats gave up seven hits and seven runs in four and two-thirds innings of work.
  • Hannah Hasle came in to relieve Coats. Hasle gave up four runs and five hits in one and a third inning of action.
  • Lily Tanski (9-2) started and earned the win for the Lady Bison. Tanski held the Lady Statesmen scoreless and only allowed four hits in six innings of work.
NOTABLES (GM1)
  • Jaclyn Deason would go 1-for-1 in the first game of the double header.
GAME 2

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lady Statesmen took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. A ground out by Karley Bloesch allowed Raegan Stafford to cross the plate for the first run of the game.
  • The Lady Bison would take a 2-1 lead in the top of the second. A Sac-fly by  Fields brought home Shano to start the inning. Feringa then singled to right field to score Jordan Cabana to end the inning.
  • In the top of the fourth, Harding's Fields hit a two-run home run to extend the Lady Bison lead to 4-1. The hit also scored Chelsea Blankenship.
  • In the  bottom of the fourth, Summer Cryder answered the Lady Bison's home run as she would hit a three-run homerun to left field. Cryder, Katelyn Hayman, and Haley Simpson scored to tie the game at 4-4.
  • In the top of the fifth, Harding's Hanna Jones stepped up to the plate and hit a two run home run that also scored Chappell to take the 6-4 lead.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, the Lady Statesmen would take a 7-6 lead. Haley Simpson doubled to center field to score Taylor Picou. Then to end the inning, Cryder singled to left field which scored Hope Harbin and Simpson.
  • The Lady Bison took an 8-7 lead in the top of the seventh and hold on to win the second game of the day. Blankenship doubled down the right field line scoring Cabana and Shano.
 
IN THE CIRCLE
  • Olivia Burns (3-7) started and took the loss for the Green and White. Burns gave up 12 hits and eight runs in seven innings of work.
  • Lily Tanski (10-2) earned the win for the Lady Bison. Tanski allowed one hit on no runs in two and one-third innings.
  • Jessica Bridges started for Harding. Bridges gave up eight hits and four runs in three and a third inning of work.
  • Jenna Hipp came in and relieved Bridges. Hipp gave up three hits and two runs in just one and one-third innings of action.
  • Emma Dwyer came in to relieve Hipp. Dwyer only faced one batter and gave up one run.
NOTABLES (GM 2)
  • Cryder accounted for five of the seven Delta State RBI's in the second game.

The Lady Statesmen are back in action on Saturday, March 27th as they travel to Memphis to play a GSC slate with Christian Brothers in a doubleheader. First pitch will be at noon at St. Benedict-Auburndale High School in Memphis, Tenn.
