UWA Sweeps Twin Bill From Diamond Statesmen

CLEVELAND, Miss. –  The University of West Alabama (8-4, 7-3 GSC) claimed 6-2 and 2-0 wins over the Delta State University baseball team (4-7, 4-7 GSC) to sweep a Gulf South Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)
  • West Alabama took a 1-0 lead in the third on a Gavin Rogers RBI single.
  • The Statesmen answered in the bottom of the third when Chad Ragland walked and scored a Hayden White single to right field.
  • The Tigers gained a 3-1 lead when two runs scored off sac-flied by Rogers and Brayden Lyman in the fifth.
  • A run crossed the plate when Ragland drew a bases loaded walk to make the score 3-2.
  • Jonathan Thibodeau singled home two runs and Lyman walked with the bases-loaded to give UWA a 6-2 lead in the seventh.
ON THE MOUND (GM 1)
  • Hunter Riggins (1-2) gave up five runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts over 6.1 innings pitched to suffer the loss.
  • Javian Stone (2-1) allowed two runs on five hits with 10 strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work to earn the win.
  • Mason Hollander (2) worked 2.2 scoreless innings in relief of Stone, striking out four while allowing two hits to record the save.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)
  • West Alabama jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Clemmons singled and scored on a Jacobey Hawthorne single and Lyman doubled and scored on a Justin Booker sac-fly.
  • The Statesmen put the tying runs on base in the sixth. Ragland reached on a fielder's choice with one out and Hayden White singled before two flyouts ended the threat.
  • Myles Christian had a two-out double but was stranded at second when a strikeout ended the frame.
  • Peyton Warren worked two scoreless innings to close out the win for the Tigers.
ON THE MOUND (GM 2)
  • Christian Day (1-2) struck out UWA 10 hitters and allowed two runs on seven hits to take the loss.
  • Connor Brooks scattered four hits over seven shutout innings with four strikeouts as the winning pitcher for UWA.
  • Warren (1) earned his first save of the season, working two scoreless innings with a strikeout. 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Colden Peeples went 4-for-5 to lead the Tigers at the plate in game one.
  • Rogers, Lyman and Thibodeau each drove in two runs for UWA.
  • Ragland, Jake Barlow, Wyatt Pratt, Blake Wolferding and Darek Sargent accounted for the Statesmen's six hits in game one.
  • White, Barlow, Christian, and Sargent had hits for the Statesmen in game two.
  • Clemmons and Rogers each went 2-for-4 to pace UWA in game two.
