CLEVELAND, Miss. -- Josh Smeltzer belted two home runs as part of a five home-run attack to power the
Delta State University baseball team (5-7, 5-7 GSC) to a 14-4 run-rule win over the
University of West Alabama (8-5, 8-4 GSC) on Sunday at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field.
Jake Barlow,
Kirkland Trahan, and
Darek Sargent joined Smeltzer in the home run parade as the Statesmen pounded out 14 hits on the afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Kirkland Trahan got the scoring started in the bottom of the first with a solo home run to left to stake Delta State to a 1-0.
- The Statesmen scored six runs in the second to build their lead to 7-0. Jake Barlow and Josh Smeltzer belted solo home runs followed by a two-run double by Hayden White. Trahan drove in the final two runs of the inning with a single.
- An RBI double by Chad Ragland and a run-scoring single by White pushed the lead to 9-0 in the third.
- Gavin Rogers' solo home run in the fourth cut the Statesmen lead to 9-1.
- The Tigers cut the deficit to 9-3 off of a pair walks with the bases loaded in the sixth.
- Delta State answered with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to push the lead to 14-3. Smeltzer launched a three-run home run and Darek Sargent hit a two-run round-tripper to highlight the inning.
- The Tigers scored a run to cut the DSU lead to 14-4. UWA had game extending run at third when Brayden Lyman grounded into a game-ending double play.
ON THE MOUND
- Landon Zizmann (2-0) tossed five innings, allowing three runs, two earned on five hits with five strikeouts to get the win.
- UWA starter JP Elkins gave up seven runs on five hits with a walk in 1.1 innings as the pitcher of record for the Tigers.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Smeltzer went 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI to place Delta State's 14-hit attack.
- Trahan finished 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.
- Barlow was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a home run.
- White completed his day with a 2-for-4, three-RBI performance.
- Rogers and Clemmons led UWA with two hits apiece.
