Statesmen Blast Way Past AUM to Claim Series

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University baseball team (18-11, 15-11 GSC) belted three home runs on the way to a 15-5 win over Auburn University at Montgomery (15-14, 13-14 GSC) on Monday at Q.V. Lowe Field on Monday.
 
Jake Barlow, Blayke Dendy, and Hayden White hit home runs to power the Statesmen's 17-hit attack.  
 
Barlow went 2-for-4 with a first-inning grand slam and a two-run double followed by White, who went 5-for-6 with two doubles, a solo home run, and two RBI, and Dendy with a two-run home run.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Statesmen jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. White and Kirkland Trahan singled and Smeltzer walked with one out to set up a Barlow grand slam home run.
  • AUM put runners at first and third with one out, but Christian Day got Grayson Blackwell to ground into a double play to end the bottom of the first.
  • Darek Sargent led off the second in the infield single and scored on a White double to give the Statesmen a 5-0 lead.
  • The Warhawks got RBI singles from Joseph Hartfield and Sage Smelley to trim the DSU lead to 5-2 in the second inning.
  • Delta State added a couple of runs to take a 7-2 lead in the fifth. Trahan singled, Smeltzer doubled, and Barlow walked with one out to start the threat. Trahan scored when Wyatt Pratt reached on a fielder's choice and Donovan Shows doubled home Smeltzer.
  • AUM cut the deficit to 7-3 in the bottom of the fifth. Hartfield singled and came around to score on a Casey Henderson single.
  • Blayke Dendy belted a two-run home run with Pratt aboard with a one-out single to push the lead to 9-3.
  • Four runs crossed to increase the lead to 13-3 in the eighth. White and Trahan singled and Smeltzer walked to load the bases with no outs. Barlow doubled down the left field line to bring home White and Trahan and a Shows double to scored Barlow and Smeltzer.
  • A Smelley two-run double in the eighth helped the Warhawks avoid the run-rule loss and cut the lead to 13-5.
  • Delta State added two runs in the ninth on a White hit a solo home run and a Pratt RBI single.
ON THE MOUND
  • Day (3-2) earned the win, allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts and four walks. 
  • Micah Henderson (5-3) gave up seven runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and three walks as the pitcher of record for Warhawks.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Barlow, Dendy, and White hit home runs to move the season home runs total 38.  
  • The Statesmen six doubles and three home runs tied a season-high for extra-base hits in a game. Delta State four doubles and five home runs against West Alabama
  • Barlow wrapped up his day going 2-for-4 with a first-inning grand slam and a two-run double.
  • Shows drove in three runs with a pair of doubles.
  • White went 5-for-6 with two doubles, a solo home run and two RBI to lead the 17-hit attack.
