MONTEVALLO, Ala. -- A seven-run fifth inning propelled the Delta State University baseball team (19-11, 16-11 GSC) to an 11-6 win over the University of Montevallo (11-17, 8-17 GSC) on Friday night at Johnson Field-Riesener Stadium.
The Statesmen scored seven runs in the fifth and four runs in the eighth to collect the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Montevallo scored three unearned runs to take a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Riley Cain had an RBI single and later scored on a wild pitch. A Ben Teel ground out plated the second run of the inning.
- The Statesmen erased the three-run deficit, erupting for seven runs to take a 7-3 lead in the fifth. Jake Barlow highlighted the inning with a grand slam. Chad Ragland had an RBI single, and Ragland scored when Smeltzer reached on an error. Blayke Dendy also doubled and scored on a Kade Dees double.
- Four runs crossed the plate in the eighth to push the advantage to 11-3. Ragland's fly ball was dropped by the right fielder that allowed Ragland to take third base to start the inning before he scored on a White single. White then scored on a Smeltzer single and two runs came home on two wild pitches.
- Alex Langford hit a three-run home run in the ninth to cut the deficit to 11-6.
- DSU reliever Cooper Brune struck out Micah Flemming with two runners on to end UM threat in the ninth.
ON THE MOUND
- Hunter Riggins (6-3) tossed seven innings with four strikeouts and five walks while allowing three runs on three hits to get the win.
- Hogan Isbell (2-5) took the loss for UM, allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits, with six strikeouts.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Barlow led the team with four RBI on his 10th home run of the season and his second grand slam in two games.
- Ragland finished 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored.
- Hayden White was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.
- Smeltzer was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
- Alex Langford went 2-for-2 with three RBI to lead Montevallo.
- The Statesmen improved to 20-5 at Johnson Field-Riesener Stadium.
