Day’s Gem Helps Statesmen Split Twin Bill with UAH

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- Christian Day tossed a five-hit complete-game shutout to help the Delta State University baseball team (22-13, 19-12 GSC) split a doubleheader with a 10-0 win over the University of Alabama Huntsville (15-15, 13-13 GSC) on Saturday at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field. 
 
The Chargers held off the Statesmen to claim an 11-9 win in game one. The Statesmen also retired the No. 15 jersey of former head baseball coach and current Director of Athletics Mike Kinnison before the doubleheader in a special ceremony.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GM 1
  • The Statesmen plated three runs in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. Josh Smeltzer had an RBI double and Blayke Dendy singled home two runs.
  • UAH answered with an eight-run second inning. Garrett Bodin's tripled drove in two runs and Landon Ezzell doubled home two runs to highlight the inning.
  • Kade Dees' solo home run in the fifth trimmed the UAH lead to 8-4.
  • A Will Acuff RBI single in the fifth gave the Chargers a 9-4 lead.
  • The Statesmen scored twice in the sixth to cut the deficit to 9-6. Darek Sargent doubled and later came home on a wild pitch.
  • Tyler McCown hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh to give UAH a 10-6 lead.
  • Sargent's second RBI double of the game got the Statesmen to within three, 10-7.
  • Blayke Dendy hit a two-run home run in the ninth to make the final score 11-9. 
ON THE MOUND | GM 1
  • Hunter Riggins (6-4) suffered the loss for the Statesmen, allowing 10 runs on 11 hits and three strikeouts.
  • Parker Warren (2-1) gave up six runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks to earn the win for UAH.
  • Parker Henson (2) recorded the final two outs in the ninth to register the save. 
HOW IT HAPPENED | GM 2
  • The Statesmen scored six runs in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead. Donovan Shows singled in two runs followed by an RBI single from Sargent. White had an RBI double and Trahan recorded an RBI with a sac-fly.
  • The Statesmen had three runs in the fourth to make the score 9-0. White tripled and scored on a Trahan ground out. Dendy doubled in a run and Barlow plated the final run on a sac-fly.
  • Pratt walked and scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded and no outs to end the game in the seventh by the NCAA mercy rule.
ON THE MOUND | GM 2
  • Day (5-2) struck out four and scattered five hits over seven shutout innings to earn the win.
  • Tyler Self (gave up nine runs on 12 hits with three strikeouts to as the losing pitcher for UAH. 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Dendy had two hits with four RBI and a home run and went 3-for-4 in game two for his fifth multi-hit game of the season.
  • Smeltzer was 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI and had a single in game two to extend his reached base streak to 24.
  • Trahan's two RBI in game two was his 16th multi-RBI game this season, tying him for the team lead with White.
  • White notched his seventh three-hit game of the year in game two.
  • The shutout in game was the third shutout by the Statesmen in the series.
