Lady Statesmen Fall in Season Finale to UAH

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- The Delta State University softball team dropped the final game game of the regular season to the University of Alabama-Huntsville Chargers by a final score of 6-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Chargers scored two runs in the first, third and fourth innings to score their six runs. The Lady Statesmen left 14 runners on base in the ball game.

GAME 1 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Chargers took advantage of an error by the Lady Statesmen to score McKenzie Nutt.
  • Next, Ashley Cornell used a sacrifice fly to score Shelby Booker and give UAH a 2-0 after the top of the first.
  • In the bottom of the first, DSU loaded the bases, but Jaclyn Deason stuck out to end the inning.
  • UAH got two on base in the second but hit into a double play to end the frame.
  • A Kiara Akles two-run home run in the third inning scored Cornell and gave UAH a 4-0 lead.
  • The Chargers used a couple of singles and stolen bases to help bring in two more runs.

IN THE CIRCLE

  • Olivia Burns (5-12) got the start and took the loss for DSU. She went three innings and gave up four runs with two of those earned. She struck out one and walked two batters.
  • Jenny Griggers came in relief and went four innings. She gave up two earned runs on five hits. She also walked two and struck out one.
  • Layton Murphy (13-4) got the start and earned the win for UAH. She went seven innings and allowed eight hits while striking out eight as well.
