Six Statesmen Home Runs Power Split with Choctaws

CLINTON, Miss. – The Delta State University baseball team (24-15, 21-14 GSC) hit five home runs to slug its way to a 15-2 run-rule win over Mississippi College (16-20, 13-18, GSC) in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at Frierson Field. 
 
The Statesmen rally from a 6-3 deficit fell short in a 6-5 loss in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GM 1
  • Three home runs highlighted the top of the first of the Green-and-White. Josh Smeltzer had a three-run blasé followed by solo home runs from Blayke Dendy and Jake Barlow to give the Statesmen an early 5-0 advantage.
  • A Wyatt Pratt RBI single and a two-run single by Chad Ragland staked the Statesmen to an 8-0 lead in the third.
  • Dendy made it 9-0 with a one-out, solo homer in the fourth inning.
  • Mississippi College got a two-run home run from Alex Hay to trim the DSU lead to 9-2.
  • The Statesmen answered with a run in the top of the fifth. Sargent singled and scored on a Ragland single to left and a 10-2 Statesmen lead.
  • Barlow notched his second round-tripper of the game, lining a two-run home run over the left field walk to grow the lead to 12-2.
  • Trahan launched a two-run home run that cleared the batters-eye in centerfield and Barlow had an RBI single to increase the lead to 15-2.
 
ON THE MOUND | GM 1
  • Christian Day (6-2) post his second straight complete game and his fourth straight win, allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
  • Peyton Bridges (5-4) gave up nine runs, seven earned, on 11 hits with two strikeouts to take the loss for the Choctaws.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED | GM 2
  • Caleb Reese's sac-fly scored Dakota Kennedy to put Mississippi College up 1-0 in the first inning.
  • The Choctaws added two runs in the second to take a 3-0 lead. A run scored on an error and Mark Pickering drove home run with a single.
  • Barlow notched his third home run of the afternoon, smacking a three-run home run to tie the game 3-3 in the fifth.
  • Alex Hay's three-run home run broke the tie and gave MC 6-3 lead in the sixth.
  • Barlow doubled in a run and later scored on a Sargent sac-fly to cut the deficit to 6-5 in the eighth.
  • The Statesmen got the tying run at third got a strikeout and a fly out to close the game,
 
ON THE MOUND | GM 2
  • Bryce Lewis (3-4) allowed four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts to earn the win for the MC.
  • Charlie Darnall (2-1) gave three runs on three hits as the pitcher of record for the Statesmen.
  • Patrick Hodges struck out three in three scoreless innings of relief to close the game on the mound for DSU.
  • Wade (2) worked 1.2 innings scoreless innings with a strikeout to earn the save for MC.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The Statesmen hit six home runs in game one to equal a season-high set against Montevallo on April 17.
  • The six home runs were the third time this season the Statemen hit five-plus round-trippers in a contest.
  • Dendy and Barlow led the six-homer attack with two home runs apiece followed by Smeltzer and Trahan each with a home run in game one.
  • The 15 runs in game one tied the season-high first set against Auburn-Montgomery on April 12 and marked the 14th time the Statesmen scored 10-plus runs in a game this season.
  • Barlow finished the doubleheader 6-for-9 with three home runs and seven RBI.
