Statesmen Walk Off UAH to Advance to GSC Title Series

OXFORD, Ala. -- Darek Sargent tripled with one out in the bottom of the ninth and scored on a Chad Ragland single to give the Delta State University baseball team (27-16) a 4-3 win over the University of Alabama Huntsville (22-18) in the 2021 Gulf South Conference Tournament Tuesday Choccolocco Park.
 
The win advances the Statesmen to the GSC Baseball Championship series against the University of West Florida on May 18-20 in Pensacola, Fla. The series starts with a single game on Tuesday, May 18 at 6 p.m. followed by game two on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and game three on Thursday at 2 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The Statesmen claimed a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Blayke Dendy and Jake Barlow had one-out singles with Dendy scoring on a Wyatt Pratt double. Barlow scored on a Donovan Shows sacrifice fly and Pratt came around on a Sargent single. 
  • UAH scored a run in the sixth, seventh, and eighth inning to tie the game 3-3.
  • Garrett Bodine singled and scored when Landon Ezzell grounded into a double play. 
  • Bratt Barbee had an RBI single in the seventh and Griffin Rivers double in the tying run in the seventh. 
  • Sargent got the bottom of the ninth started with a one-out triple to right centerfield to set Ragland's single up the middle through past a drawn-in UAH infield for the walk-off win. 
ON THE MOUND 
  • Delta State stater Hunter Riggins worked 7.2 innings, giving up three runs on three hits with three strikeouts.
  • Jackson Rutledge (2-0) worked 1.1 scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts to earn the win for the Statesmen.
  • Tyler Self (4-8) took the loss, allowing one run on two hits in one-third of an inning.  
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The Statesmen collected eight hits led by Pratt and Sargent with two apiece. 
  • Delta State advances to its 20th GSC Baseball Championship and will be seeking a GSC leading 16th GSC title.
