PENSACOLA, Fla. – Darek Sargent's seventh-inning, two-run home run helped the No. 25 Delta State University baseball team (28-16) claim a 2-1 win over No. 2 ranked University of West Florida (32-8) in game one of the 2021 Gulf South Conference Championship series on Tuesday at Jim Spooner Field.
Hunter Riggins gave up a run in the first before tossing six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts before exiting the game in the eighth inning. Reliever
Jackson Rutledge struck out five of the six hitters he faced over two shutout innings to shut the door on UWF and preserve the one-run win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Statesmen put runners at the corners with one out in the top of the first before West Florida stater Evan Floyd registered two strikeouts to end the inning.
- West Florida got an infield RBI single from Dylan Menhennett in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
- Trahan threw out Matthew Estrada trying to score from second on a Justin Dunnam single to right to keep the UWF lead at a run.
- The Statesmen put two runs on the board with two outs in the seventh. Donovan Shows doubled and scored on a Darek Sargent home run to left field to give the Statesmen a 2-1 lead.
ON THE MOUND
- Hunter Riggins (9-4) allowed one run while scattering five hits with seven strikeouts to earn the win.
- Riggins allowed a run in the first before dialing up six scoreless innings before exiting in the eighth,
- Alex Knight (3-1) gave up two runs on three hits with five strikeouts in 2.2 innings to suffer the loss for UWF.
- Jackson Rutledge (2) posted two scoreless innings with five strikeouts to earn the save.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Green and White turned two double plays to increase their GSC and NCAA leading double play number to 43.
- Sargent's home run was his fourth of the season and the GSC leading (15th NCAA) 69th round tripper of the season.
- Menhennett's RBI single in the first inning set a UWF record as he extended his hitting streak to 30 games, eight hits shy of the GSC record.
- The win improved the Statesmen to 7-4 in the GSC tournament against UWF while also ending a seven-game winning streak for the Argos.
