CLEVELAND, Miss. -- Delta State University swimmers
Giulio Brugnoni and
Celeste Turner were both named the New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference Swimmers of the Year on the men's and women's side, as voted on by the league's coaches for 2021.
The awards for swimming, which are based on the performances of the athletes at the NCAA Champions and/or the NSISC Championships, were swept by Delta State University.
Under the same criteria, University of Texas at Permian Basin diver Garrett Martin secured NSISC Diver of the Year honors on the men's side, while University of West Florida diver Kelsey DeJesus secured the NSISC Diver of the Year honors on the women's side.
Turner, a Tupelo, Miss. native, was the 2021 NCAA National Champion in the 200 butterfly and scored 45 individual points. She was also a five-time First Team All-American at this year's championships, placing in the top eight in the 100 butterfly (fifth place), 200 freestyle (eighth place), 200 butterfly (first place), 200 freestyle relay (fifth place), and 400 freestyle relay (fourth place).
She was also an honorable mention All-American in the 200 medley relay and the 400 medley relay (ninth place).
At this year's NSISC Championships, Turner won gold in the 200 butterfly, grabbed a pair of second place finishes in the 100 butterfly and the 200 freestyle, and finished third in the 100 freestyle.
Brugnoni, a senior, was the 2021 NCAA Champion in the 100 backstroke and scored 68 points individually at the national championships for the Statesmen. That mark was the third highest point total for a male athlete at this year's championships.
The Perugia, Italy native was a seven-time First Team All-American, placing in the top five in the 50 freestyle (fourth place), 100 butterfly (second place), 100 backstroke (first place), 200 backstroke (third place), 200 medley relay (fifth place), 400 medley relay (third place), and the 400 freestyle relay (fourth place).
At the 2021 NSISC Championships, Brugnoni swept gold medals in the 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, and 200 backstroke for the Green and White.
