GSC Spring All-Academic Teams | GSC Spring Academic Honor Roll
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Delta State University put five student-athletes on three Gulf South Conference Spring All-Academic teams as announced by the league on Thursday, June 17, 2021. Additionally, 124 Statesmen and Lady Statesmen were honored with the GSC Academic Honor Roll laurels.
Jake Barlow and
Hayden White were named to the GSC Spring All-Academic Baseball team and
Grant Foley was named to the men's soccer GSC Spring All-Academic squad.
Leo De Sousa and
Come Bracaval earned GSC Spring All-Academic Men's Tennis team honors.
Barlow, who carries a 3.29 GPA in environmental science, earned D2CAA and NCBWA All-South Region First-Team honors earlier this week in addition to All-GSC First-Team accolades. The Jonesville, La., product earned D2CCA Second
-Team All-American and NCBWA Third-Team All-American in addition to ABCA, D2CCA, and NCBWA First-Team All-South Region in 2019.
Barlow led the Statesmen with 19 home runs, two triples, and 61 RBI while slugging a team-best .721 starting all 47 contests for the Statesmen this season. Barlow was third on the team with a. 328 batting average and was second with 46 runs scored and 12 doubles. He ranked second in
the GSC and 11th in the nation in home runs, and his RBI mark ranked ninth
nationally.
Barlow's 19 home runs tied for fifth on the Delta State single-season home run list with Zack Shannon (2017) and his 32 career home runs stand seventh on the all-time home runs list.
White graduated from Delta State cum laude in 2020 with a bachelor's degree in biology and is currently seeking a master's degree in natural sciences with a 4.0 GPA. The Madison, Miss., native earned All-GSC Second-Team honors while starting in all 48 games for the Statesmen in 2021. White also earned GSC and NCBWA Region Player of the Week honors one time during the season.
White hit a team-best .345 and finished second with 15 doubles, 11 home runs, one triple, and 45 RBI. He was also second on the team with a .599 slugging percentage and a .425 on base
percentage. White ranked second in the GSC with 69 hits, fifth in home runs (11) and sixth in RBI (45), doubles (15) and runs scored (47).
Foley has a 3.29 GPA and is a chemistry major at Delta State. Foley played in three games with one start, bagging a goal and one assist during the GSC Men's Soccer Spring Championship series. Foley wrapped up his DSU career playing in 33 games with two goals and two assists. The Southaven, Miss., product was the men's soccer SAAC representative and also represented the GSC on the national SAAC committee. Foley has been listed on the GSC Academic Honor Roll all four seasons with DSU.
Bracaval helped the Statesmen to their first NCAA Regional since 2008 while helping DSU a 17-5 record and a 6-1 GSC record in 2021. The Toulouse, France, native went 14-3 in singles and was a combined 9-7 in doubles. Bracaval has a 4.0 GPA and is an economics major.
De Sousa was also a key component in the Statesmen run to their first NCAA Regional since 2008 and the 17-5 overall record and 6-1 GSC mark in 2021. The Montigny aux Amognes, Nievre native was 9-6 overall and 6-2 in GSC play in singles and tallied an 8-5 doubles record.
Overall, 1,651 student-athletes across 12 sports made the 2021 GSC Spring Academic Honor. Student-Athletes must have a 3.0 GPA or higher for GSC Academic honor and above a 3.20 GPA to be eligible for nomination to the GSC Spring All-Academic teams.
