BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Delta State University football player Kory Gainwell earned Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week honors as announced by the league on Monday morning. 

Gainwell rushed five times for 23 yards and one touchdown for the Statesmen in DSU's 45-17 Pig Pickin' victory over McKendree on Saturday, Sept. 11. Saturday's win marked the second straight game with a rushing touchdown for Gainwell. 

The Benton, Miss. native, also tallied 83 kick return yards on three attempts, averaging 27.7 yards per return against the Bearcats. For the season, Gainwell is averaging 33.8 yards per kickoff return.

Gainwell has tallied 235 all-purpose yards, including kick returns, through the first two games of the season for the Statesmen. He has 13 carries for 59 yards rushing and two touchdowns, one reception for seven yards, and 5 kick returns for 169 yards.
