CLEVELAND, Miss. -- The Delta State University men's soccer team scored early and often in its conference home opener as they dispatched Shorter University 5-1 on Friday afternoon.
Clair Cox IV contributed two goals while
Remi Emeriau added a goal and two assists to cap off an impressive team effort.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Emeriau opened the scoring in the 23rd minute on a well-placed shot from outside the 18-yard box.
- Cox IV netted his first goal just four minutes later from an Emeriau pass to cap off a Statesmen counter attack.
- Odinn Johannsson made it 3-0 in the 30th minute as he calmly dribbled around the Shorter goalkeeper and put the ball into an empty net.
- The Hawks cut into the Green and White lead in the 37th minute on a Bailey Lopez penalty kick.
- Davide Maiello received the match's only yellow card in the 59th minute.
- Cox IV added to his tally exactly 60 seconds later by placing a Pablo López-Melús corner kick into the back of the net on a volley.
- Pablo Herrera joined the scoring party in the 71st minute, giving Emeriau his second assist in the process.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Statesmen outshot the Hawks 16-5.
- While Mattis Kloepper made two saves, Shorter's goalkeeper made none as all Delta State's shots on goal went in.
- The Green and White had nine corner kicks to Shorter's one, all coming in the second half.
- Tom Toulson notched his third assist of the season, putting him one behind Emeriau's team-leading four.
- This was Delta State's biggest win over Shorter, eclipsing their 3-1 victory on Sept. 14, 2012.
- They also set the program record for most goals against Shorter, breaking the previous mark of three set on four different occasions.
- The Statesmen also tied their own record for most goals scored in a Gulf South Conference match. They also scored five in a win against Auburn University at Montgomery on Sept. 11, 2016.
