ST. LOUIS -- The Delta State University Lady Statesmen fell victim to bad luck down the final stretch in their season opener against the University of Missouri-St. Louis Tritons.
Despite taking a 1-0 lead into half time, their opponents struck twice in the second half, scoring the winner with less than five minutes to play in regulation.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- UMSL took the first shot of the game in the 23rd minute, but the Lady Statesmen defense got in the way.
- Just over one minute later, Lavinia Horning recorded the match's first shot on goal.
- Jaycee Cotton recorded the first clear-cut scoring chance in the 31st minute, but Amanda Hillard acrobatically tipped her shot over the bar.
- Mackenzie Thompson sent a header into the back of the net off a Poppy Derhun cross, putting the Lady Statesmen ahead 1-0.
- The Lady Statesmen registered one more shot on goal before the end of the first half.
- Peyton McNabb equalized for the Tritons in the 51st minute, scoring on a deflected shot following a free kick.
- Delta State continued to put the pressure on the UMSL defense over the next 10 minutes but could not convert any of their four set pieces.
- Hilliard had to come up big again, as she made a diving save in the 62nd minute.
- Nicola Hauk came inches away from putting the Lady Statesmen back on top from a Robyn Moody corner kick in the 78th minute.
- Cotton finished off a counter attack to put UMSL in front, netting the game-winning goal in the 87th minute.
- The Green and White only produced one more shot, a long-range Mia Ramirez strike that sailed just over the crossbar.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- UMSL outshot Delta State 7-6, however both teams finished with five shots on goal
- Hilliard made three saves in the loss.
- Both teams committed double digit fouls, with the Tritons having 15 to DSU's 12
