INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Statesmen football (10-1 overall, 6-1 GSC) was selected as the No. 2 seed for Super Region 2 on Sunday afternoon and will host the Fayetteville State Broncos (9-2, 7-1 CIAA) from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association in the first round of the NCAA Playoffs. The Broncos won their fourth conference title on Saturday on a 43-yard field goal as time expired to defeat Chowan Hawks (7-4, 7-1).
The Statesmen defeated GSC conference rival West Alabama 17-7 on Saturday to cap off their first 10-win regular season since 2000. Delta State also claimed their first GSC title since 2014 the week prior, the 8th conference champioship in program history.
The current Division II playoff format, which has been in place since 2016, features 4 Super Regions made of 7 teams each, with the top-seeded team in each region receiving a first-round bye. Benedict (11-0) from the SIAC recieved the No. 1 seed for Super Region 2. Delta State is joined by GSC member West Florida (9-1) as the No. 3 seed in the region and could possibly see the Argonauts in the second round should each team advance.
