MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Delta State split the night with Christian Brothers in the Bluff City on Thursday on a night highlighted by the first conference win for the Lady Statesmen under first-year head coach Tracy Stewart-Lange. The Delta State Men's team fell in part due to a 60% shooting night from the Buccaneers.
The Lady Statesmen trailed at the end of the first quarter, but outscored CBU 17-10 in the second quarter to take control of the lead at the half. The two teams traded points the rest of the way, but the Lady Statesmen scored the final four points of the game in their 57-51 victory.
Camryn Davis led Delta State in scoring with 16 points, trailing only CBU's Emily Jones for the game-high at 17 points. Davis also recorded 9 rebounds, 5 of which came on the offensive side of the court.
Brysa Maxwell recorded an impressive double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Michelle Smith was also in double figures with 10 points to go with her 6 rebounds and 2 assists. She was joined by Ginny Higginbotham as the only Lady Statesmen to make a 3-pointer in the game.
The Delta State men's team trailed the Bucs 44-32 after a 60% first half shooting performance by the Bucs, but held CBU to just 29 points in the second half of their 73-63 loss on Thursday. Delta State also took advantage of the majority of their 14 offensive rebounds, scoring 21 second-chance points in the contest.
Sam Smith scored a game-high 23 points on a 10-of-19 shooting performance from the field, including hitting 3 of his 5 three-point attempts. Smith was also extremely active around the hoop with 17 rebounds and 4 blocks to his credit as well.
Kelen Dietrich was also in double figures with 13 points and 4 assists. Demond Franklin had 9 points and 3 boards. Derek Moore also had 8 points.
