CLEVELAND, Miss. -- Delta State Football (11-2 overall) saw their season come to an end on Saturday afternoon in a 38-27 loss to West Florida (11-1) in the second round of the NCAA Division II Football Playoffs. The Statesmen led by 14 in the second half, but a 28-point fourth quarter for the Argonauts would propel West Florida into the third round. Delta State finished the season with double-digits in the win column for the first time since 2011.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Delta State fumbled the ball two plays into their first possession at their own 21-yard line, but the defense held the Argos to a 25-yard field goal from Griffin Cerra. 3-0 West Florida.

Patrick Shegog scored his first rushing touchdown from a yard out on the following DSU drive that saw the Statesmen move 69 yards in 7 plays. 7-0 Delta State.

The Statesmen defense stopped the Argos on 4th-and-4 from the DSU 35-yard line on the next UWF drive. Nick Herber split the uprights 12 plays later from 25 yards out. 10-3 Delta State.

Both defenses would force punts on their next times out. West Florida's Peewee Jarrett connected with receiver David Durden on a 52-yard touchdown pass to tie the game early in the second quarter. 10-10 tie.

Delta State would lose another fumble on their next drive, but the defense held again, forcing another Argos punt. Delta State started at their own 3-yard line, but only needed four plays to move 97 yards. Alfonso Franklin's 76-yard carry would set up another 1-yard Patrick Shegog touchdown carry just two plays after. 17-10 Delta State.

The two teams would trade punts again and the DSU defense would again hold the Argonauts on a fourth down conversion attempt before the end of the half. 17-10 Delta State at halftime.
- Delta State extended their lead midway through the third quarter with a 14-play, 77-yard drive that ended with a third Patrick Shegog rushing touchdown from 3 yards out on 4th-and-2. 24-10 Delta State.

West Florida answered back quickly at the beginning of the fourth quarter with a 35-yard touchdown pass from Jarrett to Jakobe Quillen on the first play of the quarter. 24-17 Delta State.
- A DSU punt would set up a 6-play, 68-yard scoring drive for the Argos that ended with a 3-yard rushing score from Shomari Mason. 24-24 tie.

Delta State drove all the way down to the West Florida 2-yard line on the following drive, but they were forced to settle for a 20-yard field goal from Nick Herber to reclaim the lead with just 4:10 left in regulation. 27-24 Delta State.
- West Florida then drove down all the way to the DSU 1-yard line and capped off a 10-play, 75-yard drive with the go-ahead touchdown rush by CJ Wilson with 30 seconds left in the game. 31-27 West Florida.

A 39-yard Argonaut pick-six on the first play of the following Delta State drive would seal the fate of the Statesmen with just 20 seconds left in the game. 38-27 West Florida final.

Patrick Shegog was 12-for-22 for 154 yards with one interception. He also carried the ball 21 times for 78 yards and 3 touchdowns.
