Two Statesmen Named All-Americans

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- Two Statesmen football players were named to the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), Division II Commisioners Conference Association (D2CCA), and Associated Press All-America teams. Placekicker Nick Herber was named to first team special teams and offensive lineman Nicolas Melsop was named to second team offense.

"We are very proud of the season that both Melsop and Herber had. They are selfless guys who just want to win," said head coach Todd Cooley. "Everything they accomplished this year was in an effort to help our team succeed. I am very happy for both of them along with the rest of our team for having such a successful season."

Nick Herber was named first team All-GSC, first team Super Region 2, and a finalist for the Fred Mitchell award for the top placekickers in the nation. He led all of Division II in field goal percentage, having made 19 of his 20 attempts (.950) in 2022. Herber was also 7th in the nation in Total Points Scored and the top scoring kicker in the country with 123 points.

Nicolas Melsop was named first team All-GSC, first team Super Region 2, and a finalist for the Gene Upshaw award for the best offensive of defensive lineman in Division II. Melsop graded out at 90% or greater in all 13 games this season and recorded 46 knockdowns.

The two Statesmen join West Florida offensive lineman Dalton Simpler as the only All-American representatives from the Gulf South Conference. Delta State is also one of only eleven schools at the Division II level to have multiple All-American selections in the AFCA and D2CCA polls.
