Cartwright Dominates as Delta State Takes Down GSC-Leading Union

JACKSON, Tenn. -- Maalik Cartwright played perhaps his best game of the season against the top team in the Gulf South Conference, as his 25 points and seven rebounds helped propel the Delta State University men's basketball to a narrow victory over No. 22 Union (Tenn.) University.

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Cartwright recorded each of Delta State's first six points, but Union maintained an 8-6 lead through the game's first five minutes.
  • Both teams traded buckets in the early goings, but the Statesmen jumped out to a 16-12 lead with 10:52 left in the first half, their largest of the period.
  • Union continued to battle, but Delta State held them off to close the half and finished with a 24-21 advantage.
  • DSU opened up the second half on fire as Kasey Walker-Gregg and Cartwright registered the first seven points to pull ahead 31-21 at the 16:45 mark.
  • After building their lead up to 11, Union got on a run and brought themselves level at 39 with 8:37 left in regulation.
  • Though the Bulldogs briefly took the lead, the Statesmen refused to fold, and Lee Cotton nailed a contested three to put the Statesmen back in front 42-41 with 7:06 remaining.
  • Delta State used the momentum from Cotton's shot to create some separation, and after falling behind 42-44, they spearheaded an 8-0 run to reclaim a 50-44 edge with 3:51 to go.
  • With less than two minutes left to play, Union drained a couple big shots and a free throw to create a 5-0 run themselves, getting within one point of DSU at 56-55.
  • Cartwright went to work inside once again and dropped his 25th point of the night and gave the Statesmen a 58-55 lead with 18 seconds left.
  • On the final possession, Delta State prevented Union from taking a game-tying shot and forced a steal to seal the victory.
