ROME, Ga. -- Taylor Picou was 4-for-4 from the plate with four RBI as the Delta State University softball team defeated Shorter University 8-3 on Sunday afternoon.
The win gave the Lady Statesmen the opening Gulf South Conference series win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Delta State got on the board first in the second inning. Alyssa Branyan singled up the middle to score Chrissy Tubbs.
- Shorter tied the game in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI single.
- DSU retook the lead in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run by Taylor Picou.
- Back-to-back doubles for Shorter in the bottom of the fourth made it 3-2.
- MyCala Helms added a RBI in the fifth inning scoring Karley Bloesch to extend the lead to 4-2.
- Katelyn Hayman and Kailyn Lofton both had RBIs in the sixth inning to make it 6-2.
- Picou had a two RBI single in the top of the seventh to make it 8-2.
- Shorter scored one run it to bottom of the seventh to make it an 8-3 final.
IN THE CIRCLE
- In her first outing of the season, Jenny Griggers (1-0) went three innings and gave up two runs on four hits.
- Hannah Hasle threw four innings of relief and gave up one run on five hits.
- Asia McWaters (0-3) took the loss, going four innings while giving up three runs on five hits.
- Anna Loyd went one inning in relief and gave up two runs on three hits.
NOTABLES
- Picou was 4-for4 from the plate with four RBI and two runs scored.
- Helms and Lofton were the only two other Lady Statesmen with multiple hits.
