Statesmen Take 17-6 Win to Open Southern Indiana Series

CLEVELAND, Miss. –  Kirkland Trahan, Chad Ragland, and Carson Clowers combined for 10 hits and nine RBI to lead the Delta State University baseball team to a 17-6 win over Southern Indiana University on Friday night at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field.

  HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Statesmen took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Chad Ragland led off with a single and scored on a Blayke Dendy sac-fly. 
  • Southern Indiana used a four-run second to take a 4-1 lead. Tyler Wheeler drove in a pair of runs with a single and Ren Tachioka had an RBI single and stole home on a double steal. 
  • Delta State replied with a four-run bottom of the second and six runs in the third inning to take an 11-4 lead.
  • Clowers drove in a run with a single followed by a Ragland RBI double in the second. A run scored on an RBI ground out by Hayden White and another run came home on a throwing error in the inning. 
  • Kirkland Trahan highlighted the third with a three-run blast to right field along with RBI singles from Kade Dees and Clowers. Ragland also got a run home with a sac-fly.
  • The Green-and-White added a run in the fifth, three runs in the sixth, and two runs in the seventh on Noah Thigpen's second home run of the season.
  • USI scored its final two runs in the seventh. 
ON THE MOUND 
  • Landon Zizmann (5-1) had five strikeouts and gave up six runs, five earned on 10 hits in 6.1 innings of work to earn the win. 
  • Cade Whitley tossed the final 2.2 innings, striking out four while not allowing a run or hit. 
  • USI Trent Robinson (2-2) allowed 10-runs on 11 hits to take the loss. 
NOTABLES
  • Ragland finished the night 4-for-4 with three RBI, a double, and three runs scored as the Statesmen finished with 19 hits. 
  • Trahan went 3-for-4 with a three-run home run, his fifth of the season. 
  • Clowers was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored 
  • White, Pratt, and Dees collected two hits apiece.
  • The Statesmen improved to 5-1 at Ferriss Field and 6-5 in non-conference action.

The Statesmen and Southern Indiana continue the three-game set with a single game on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field.
