Lady Statesmen Split Doubleheader With UAH

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Delta State University softball team split the double header with the Chargers of the University of Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday afternoon. In game one, Lacey Coats threw a complete game one hitter shutting out UAH for the Lady Statesmen first win in Huntsville since 2003. DSU scored one run in the second inning and that was the Lady Statesmen needed.
 
In game two, UAH scored three runs in the sixth inning to pull away and win 6-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME 1
  • In the top of the second, Katelyn Hayman was walked with the bases loaded and Kailyn Lofton scored the only run of the game.
  • UAH had two doubles and a single as their only hits.
  • DSU got two on base in the sixth inning but they were left stranded.
  • Jenny Griggers and Alyssa Branyan combined to turn a double play to end the game.
IN THE CIRCLE | GAME 1
  • Lacey Coats (3-3) threw a complete game three hitter. She did not allow a run, walked four, and struck out four.
  • Megan Shurtz (5-2) for UAH gave up one run on six hits while striking out five.
HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME 2
  • UAH scored the first run of the game in the second inning on a passed ball. The Chargers then added a second run on a groundout.
  • Delta State tied the game in the third inning when Taylor Picou's sacrifice fly scored Chrissy Tubbs. That was followed by Karley Bloesch hitting a single to score Alyssa Gover.
  • A double from UAH in the fourth gave them a 3-2 lead.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, a double error and a single scored three runs for UAH to make it 6-2.
IN THE CIRCLE | GAME 2
  • Hannah Hasle (2-2) got the start and went five innings. She gave upfive runs on seven hits with three of those runs earned.
  • Olivia Burns went two-thirds of an inning giving up two hits and a run.
  • Lacey Coats went one-third of an inning to end the game.
  • Layton Murphy got the start for UAH. She went three innings while fgiving up five hits and two runs with a strikeout.
  • Megan Shurtz (6-2) came in relief and threw four innings. She only gave up one hit and struck out two.
NOTABLES 
  • This was the first win for DSU at UAH since 2003.

Delta State will return home and will take on Lee University Friday, March 11 with a doubleheader and a single game on Saturday, March 12.
