Lady Statesmen Split Doubleheader Against Union

JACKSON, Tenn. -- The Delta State University softball team split a doubleheader with Union University on Saturday afternoon.

In game one, DSU lost 5-2. The Lady Statesmen only managed two hits and struck out 11 times in the loss. In the win, DSU scored five runs in the third inning and hung for the 7-3 victory. In the two games, Alana Walker was 4-for-8 at the plate with three RBI and a run scored.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME 1
  • In the top of the first inning, Alana Walker got a hit but was stranded at second base.
  • DSU got the final out of the first inning on a throw from Katelyn Hayman to Taylor Picou to MyCala Helms to get an out at home plate.
  • Union scored the first run of the game as Idalia Alarcon scored on a Baylee Stewart single.
  • In the fourth inning, Fallen Groves hit a two-run home run to make it 3-0.
  • Jenny Griggers reached first on an error and then came around to score on a wild pitch.
  • Walker then drove in Hayman with a single to make it 3-2 in the fifth.
  • Union added a run in the fifth inning with four hits with Grace White bringing in Alyssa Ward.
IN THE CIRCLE | GAME 1
  • Lacey Coats (8-5) took the loss for DSU. She went four innings and gave up three runs on four hits and struck out three.
  • Makenna Keeton pitched in relief for the Lady Statesmen. She went two innings giving up two runs on seven hits.
  • Laken DiStefano (3-6) earned the win for Union. She went seven innings, giving up two unearned runs while striking out 11 batters.
HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME 2
  • Kailyn Lofton turned a double play in the second inning to keep Union off the scoreboard. 
  • Delta State struck first in the third inning when Walker hit a bloop single to score Hayman and Raegan Stafford.
  • Walker scored as well in the third inning on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
  • After an error, Chrissy Tubbs scored on a Karley Bloesch single to make in 4-0 in the fourth inning.
  • Taylor Picou drove in Griggers for the final run of the third inning making it 5-0.
  • In the bottom of the third, Union scored two runs on three hits to make it a 5-2 score.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, DSU turned a double play to end the Union threat.
  • Walker had her third RBI of the day with a single to score Helms to make it 6-2 in the top of the sixth.
  • Union's Grace White drove in a run in the sixth, but Olivia Burns came into to pitch and retired three straight to end the threat.
  • In the top of the seventh, Hayman brought Alyssa Gover in to make it 7-3.
IN THE CIRCLE | GAME 2
  • Hannah Hasle (7-3) earned the win. She went five innings, giving up 12 hits and only three runs.
  • Oliva Burns earned the two inning save and had three strikeouts.
  • Kira Finkley (1-4) took the loss for the Lady Bulldogs. She gave up five runs on six hits in two innings.
  • Olivia Baker went five innings in relief and gave up two runs on five hits.

  • Alanna Walker had the only two hits for DSU in game one.
  • In game two, Walker had two hits and three RBI.
  • Hayman was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI in game two.
