Lady Statesmen Comeback Falls Just Short at West Alabama

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Delta State University softball team comeback attempt fell just short against the University of West Alabama on Friday evening. The Lady Statesmen scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning but dropped the contest 7-6. DSU and UWA were tied 3-3 before UWA pulled ahead in the bottom of the fifth scoring four runs on three hits and an error.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the top of the first, the Lady Statesmen got two on base but ground into a double play to end the threat.
  • The Tigers of West Alabama scored a run on a Nicole Buccieri single.
  • MyCala Helms lined into a double play to end the second inning.
  • Alana Walker drove in Katelyn Hayman to tie the game at 1-1 in the third inning.
  • Walker was then thrown out trying to go to third on a ground out by Chrissy Tubbs.
  • UWA scored twice on three hits in the bottom of the third to retake a 3-1 lead.
  • Kailyn Lofton drove in Olivia Burns in the top of the fourth to make it a 3-2 deficit.
  • In the top of the fifth, Hayman scored on an error from the UWA centerfielder off of a Chrissy Tubbs single.
  • UWA added two runs when Riley Sullivan hit a single up the middle in the bottom of the fifth inning.
  • After a DSU error, UWA scored two more runs on a Cassie Matlock single to take a 7-3 lead after five innings.
  • In the top of the seventh, Taylor Picou drive in Tubbs to make it 7-4.
  • That was followed by an error on UWA. That allowed Olivia Burns to score to push the score to 7-5.
  • The final run came when MyCala Helms brought home Alyssa Gover to make it 7-6.
IN THE CIRCLE
  • Lacey Coats (8-12) took the loss. She went four and two-thirds innings giving up nine hits and six runs while striking out three.
  • Makenna Keeton went one and one-third innings giving up a run on two hits.
  • Hannah Mynard (13-5) went seven innings giving up eight hits and six runs while striking out four for UWA.
NOTABLES 
  • Hayman was hit by a pitch twice and has now been hit 11 times this season.
  • Delta State hit into three double plays in the game.
  • Nicole Buccieri for UWA was 4-for-4 from the plate with two runs batted in.
