Statesmen Blow Past Boll Weevils, 16-2

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- Blayke Dendy, Jake Barlow, and Carson Clowers belted home runs to lead the Delta State University baseball team to a 16-2 run-rule win over the University of Arkansas-Monticello on Tuesday night at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field.

  HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Jake Barlow put the Statesmen ahead 1-0 with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. 
  • The Statesmen pushed eight runs across in the second to build the lead to 9-0. Jake Barlow doubled in two runs while Hayden White and Carson Clowers had two-run singles to highlight the inning. 
  • A Cade Thompson two-run home run to left cut the DSU lead to 9-2.
  • Dendy's grand slam home run highlighted a six-run third as the Statesmen claimed a 15-2 lead. 
  • Clowers' first home run of the season made the score 16-2 in the fourth inning. 
ON THE MOUND
  • Statesmen starter Cade Whitley (2-1) struck out a career-high eight batters while allowing two runs on three hits in 5.0 innings of work to earn the win for the Statesmen.
  • UAM starter Charlie Peacock (3-3) gave up eight runs on four hits with two strikeouts and three walks as the losing pitcher.
NOTABLES
  • Barlow's first-inning solo home run was the 41st of his career, moving past Jud Thigpen for third on the DSU all-time home runs list. 
  • Clowers went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, three RBI and his first career home as a Statesman. 
  • The Statesmen hit three home runs in a game for the third time this season and have hit two-plus homers nine times.
  • Dendy led the Statesmen with four RBI on his third-inning grand slam. 
  • Barlow had a double and a home run, and White had two hits as the only other Statesman with multiple hits.
