Lady Statesmen Drop Two Close Games to Mississippi College

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- The Delta State University softball team let two late leads slip away as Mississippi College won both games of the doubleheader to sweep the weekend Gulf South Conference series.

Delta State had a comeback in game one to force extra innings, but the Lady Choctaws rallied back in front with a two-run eighth inning to take game one.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME 1
  • In the top of the second inning, Jordan Lafosse and Anna Marie Peavy hit back doubles to give Mississippi College the 1-0 lead.
  • Chrissy Tubbs ended the threat in the second inning by turning a double play in throwing Peavy out at first.
  • Olivia Burns and MyCala Helms each hit a double in the second inning to tie the game at 1-1.
  • MC retook the lead in the top of the third inning scoring two runs on three hits.
  • Taylor Picou hit a double to score Kailyn Lofton in the bottom of the third to make it 3-2.
  • Tubbs had a two RBI single to score Jenny Griggers and Picou to give DSU the 4-3 lead.
  • Alyssa Branyan and Alana Walker were both walked with the bases loaded to score two more runs in the third inning to make the score 6-3.
  • In the top of the fifth, the Lady Choctaws scored four runs on four hits with two out.
  • Helms' single in the bottom of the fifth tied the game at seven when Tubbs scored.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Burns drove in Griggers and then came around to score on a double steal with Tubbs taking second and Burns taking home.
  • AnneMarie Peavy hit a three-run home run in the top of the seventh to give MC a 10-9 lead.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Katelyn Hayman scored on an error to tie the game and force extra innings.
  • MC scored two runs on two hits and an error to take the 12-10 lead and then held on for the win.
IN THE CIRCLE | GAME 1
  • Hannah Hasle got the start. She went two and two-thirds of an inning giving up three runs on six hits.
  • Olivia Burns (2-5) through in relief and went five and one third innings giving up nine runs on eight hits while walking three.
  • Avery Barnett (9-7) went six and one-third innings and gave up seven runs on six hits.
  • Avery Sanders threw for one and two-thirds innings and gave up three runs on four hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME 2
  • Kailyn Lofton hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first to give DSU a 1-0 lead.
  • Mississippi College answered with two runs in the top of the second on a double from Peavy and an error from DSU.
  • In the bottom of the third, Burns hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Raegan Stafford and tie the game at 2-2.
  • In the bottom of the fourth inning, Bloesch and Lofton both drove in runs to give DSU a 4-2 lead.
  • In the top of the of the fifth inning, Jenna Ergle hit a three-run home run for Mississippi College to give them a 5-4 lead.
  • Picou hit a sacrifice fly to score Burns and tied the game at 5-5.
  • In the top of the sixth, Brooke Fagan had a sacrifice fly and Ergle had a two-run home run to give the Lady Choctaws a 8-5 lead.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Lofton hit her third RBI of the game driving in Hayman to make it 8-6.
  • Burns then hit a double off of the wall to score Lofton and make it 8-7.
  • Delta State turned a double play in the top of the seventh to help keep a run off the board.
IN THE CIRCLE | GAME 2
  • Lacey Coats (8-8) went the complete game and gave up eight runs with only four earned on 11 hits.
  • Barnett (10-7) went three and two-thirds innings giving up six hits and three runs.
  • Sanders went three and one-third innings and gave up three hits and four runs.
NOTABLES 
  • Lofton had two solo home runs this weekend. She went three-for-three in game three.
  • Tubbs had two RBI in game one.
  • MC has won seven of the last nine games against DSU.
