Statesmen Shutout Shorter In GSC Tourney Opener

OXFORD, Ala. -- Blayke Dendy drove in eight runs to lead No. 1 seed Delta State University baseball to a 13-0 win over No. 8 seed Shorter University to open the 2022 Gulf South Conference Tournament on Friday at Choccolocco Park.

Delta State starting pitcher Harrison Haley tossed seven shutout innings with sevens strikeouts to register his fifth complete game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A Kirkland Trahan RBI single and a Blayke Dendy grand slam gave the Statesmen a 5-0 lead in the first. 
  • The Statesmen added four runs to build a 9-0 lead in the fifth. Dendy delivered a two-run double, and Wyatt Pratt had an RBI single to highlight the frame.
  • Delta State plated four runs in the sixth to take a 13-0 lead. Hayden White had an RBI single, and Dalton Cummins drew a walk with the bases loaded. Dendy then singled home two runs to give the Statesmen an 11-0 lead.
ON THE MOUND 
  • Haley (10-1) struck out seven Hawks and scattered three hits with no walks over seven shutout innings. 
  • Kenny Jinks (1-2) gave up five runs on three hits with two walks in a third of an inning to suffer the loss for the Hawks.
NOTABLES
  • Dendy's grand slam was his eighth homer of the season while extending his hitting streak to six games. 
  • Dendy's eight RBI was his third five-plus RBI game and his seventh multi-RBI game while falling one shy of the DSU single-game RBI record. 
  • Barlow extended his consecutive reached base streak to 23.
  • Barlow's single in the sixth moved him into a tie with Casey Myrick (1995-98) for sixth on the career total bases list with 402. 
  • The Statesmen opened their third straight GSC Tournament with a run-rule win. 
  • The Statesmen improved to 107-61 all-time in the GSC Tournament play. 
  • Haley recorded a GSC-best (8th NCAA) 10th win and his fifth complete game of the season.
