CLEVELAND, Miss. -- The Statesmen (6-11 overall, 5-9 GSC) used a takeover performance by
Maalik Cartwright to fuel their 75-68 win over Christian Brothers (3-14, 3-10) on Saturday night. Cartwright's 45-point showing is a new career-high for the junior forward and ranks fourth in school history for points in a single game.
Maalik also recently joined an exclusive club as he became the 19th player in DSU history to join the 1,000-point club. He currently ranks 17th in school history with 1,117 points in his career as a Statesman.
Both teams shot over 50 percent from the field, but the Statesmen shot more high-percentage shots, highlighted by a 46-24 advantage in paint points for DSU. Delta State also won the second chance points battle with a 14-7 advantage.
Kelen Dietrich also reached double-figures with 10 points and 2 made three-pointers. Delta State hit 6 shots from beyond the arc with buckets also coming from Cartwright,
Caleb Allen (8 points), and
Jonathan Knight (3 points).
Sam Smith came up just short of what would've been his 9th double-double of the season. Smith scored 9 points and hauled in 9 boards against the Bucs.
