Statesmen Drop Home Game Against West Florida

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- Delta State's perfect season bid comes to an end at home against the West Florida Argonauts, but all of the team's goals are still ahead of them. West Florida out-scored the Statesmen 14-0 in the second half as they picked up a 24-21 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • West Florida got the opening kickoff and both teams were forced to punt in their first drives. The Argos scored on their second drive, going 80 yards in 8 plays as quarterback Peewee Jarrett hit Caden Leggett for a 26-yard score. 7-0 West Florida.
  • Delta State was forced to punt on their next two drives, but a muffed punt on the third drive gave DSU the ball at the UWF 9-yard line. Patrick Shegog found Jaylen Green in the endzone for a 7-yard score two plays later. 7-7 tied.
  • Jaylen May opened the scoring in the second half as Shegog hit him in stride for a 55-yard DSU touchdown to cap a 6-play, 81-yard drive. 14-7 Delta State.
  • The Argonauts used 10 plays to go 60 yards, but settled for a 27-yard field goal from Griffin Cerra. 14-10 Delta State.
  • Delta State moved the ball with incredible efficiency just before the end of the half, going 80 yards in 8 plays, taking just 52 seconds off the clock. Shegog found tight end Tycen Gray alone in the endzone for a DSU touchdown with just 22 seconds left in the second. 21-10 Delta State at the half.
  • The game started to slow down in the third quarter as each team had just three possessions each in the frame. UWF scored in their second drive of the quarter as Jarrett connected with John Jiles for a 19-yard touchdown to end a 7-play, 56-yard drive after DSU turned the ball over on downs. 21-17 Delta State.
  • The Argonauts had the ball at the start of the third quarter where Jarrett again found Jiles for a 19-yard score to take the lead at 24-21. The Argos forced two DSU punts in the fourth quarter and left the Statesmen with only a hail mary attempt in the final seconds. 24-21 West Florida final.
OFFENSIVE NOTABLES:
  • Patrick Shegog completed 13 of his 33 pass attempts for 186 yards and three touchdowns. He also carried the ball 12 times for 43 yards.
  • Jaylen May caught 2 passes for 78 yards and a touchdown.
  • Jaylen Green caught 3 passes for 63 yards and a score.
  • KJ Smith led the Statesmen with 54 yards rushing on 13 carries.

  • Nick Herber made all three of his point-after attempts.
