Statesmen Win 12th Straight Road Game with Win Over Wolves

CARROLTON, Ga. -- Delta State's perfect season bid comes to an end at home against the West Florida Argonauts, but all of the team's goals are still ahead of them. West Florida out-scored the Statesmen 14-0 in the second half as they picked up a 24-21 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Both teams were forced to punt on their first drives. West Georgia ate up over seven minutes of clock to score with just 1:57 left in the first quarter after a 13-play, 80-yard drive ended with a 2-yard scoring rush by quarterback Cameran Brown. 7-0 West Georgia.
  • Delta State answered quickly on the next drive, moving 75 yards in just 3:33 as Christian Malloy capped the drive with a 3-yard score to even the game. 7-7 tied.
  • A UWG punt gave DSU the ball back at their own 25-yard line. Nick Herber ended the drive with a 22-yard field goal to give Delta State the lead. 10-7 Delta State.
  • West Georgia was forced to punt again, giving DSU the ball back with just 1:45 left in the half. Delta State moved 64 yards over 11 plays in just 1:29 as Patrick Shegog completed three passes and called his own number on a five-yard scoring rush. 17-7 Delta State at halftime.
  • Both teams were forced to punt on their first drives of the second half. Delta State was also forced to punt from their own 31-yard line. The punt was blocked into the endzone and recovered by the Wolves for a touchdown. 17-13 Delta State.
  • Another DSU punt gave West Georgia the ball at their own 8-yard line. The first play of the drive saw UWG quarterback Ben Whitlock's pass batted back to himself in the endzone, but he attempted another pass while in the endzone. The illegal forward pass resulted in a safety, giving DSU the ball back. 19-13 Delta State.
  • The Statesmen had to punt after the free kick, but West Georgia only ran one play after a fumble was recovered by the Green & White defense at the UWG 10. Shegog found Tycen Gray open on a screen three plays later for a 6-yard touchdown. 26-13 Delta State.
  • Another UWG punt in the fourth gave DSU the ball at the Wolves' 28-yard line. Delta State marched 69 yards in 9 plays and ended the drive with a Kelvin Smith scoring rush from 11 yards out. 33-13 Delta State.
  • A Malik Jones interception (with a club protecting his hand) gave DSU the ball at the UWG 28-yard line. Tamaj Hoffman scored his first Green & White touchdown from 4 yards out with 1:39 left to seal the drive. 40-13 Delta State.
  • West Georgia got the ball back and drove all the way to the DSU 2-yard line. Demario Martin sacked UWG's quarterback and forced a fumble that he picked up and took it 74 yards to the house. 47-13 Delta State final.
OFFENSIVE NOTABLES:
  • Patrick Shegog completed 19 of his 33 pass attempts for 248 yards and one touchdown. He also carried the ball 6 times for 17 yards and a touchdown.
  • Jaylen Green caught 3 passes for 66 yards and a touchdown.
  • KJ Smith carried the ball 23 times for 77 yards and a touchdown.
DEFENSIVE NOTABLES: SPECIAL TEAMS NOTABLES:
  • Nick Herber made all six of his point-after attempts. He also made a 22-yard field goal.
  • Parker Burleson punted 4 times for an average of 41.8 yards per attempt.
OTHER NOTABLES:
  • Delta State records 411 yards of total offense.
  • Statesmen Defense recorded 3 turnovers with 2 fumbles and an interception.
UP NEXT:
Delta State hosts Mississippi College at Parker-McCool next Saturday for the final game of the regular season, which also happens to be a combination Homecoming and Senior Day game. Kickoff against the Choctaws on Saturday, November 11 is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
