Statesmen Ground Game Dominates in Top-25 Win

VALDOSTA, Ga. -- #8 Delta State's run game puts on a game for the ages as the Statesmen rushed for 417 yards. The defense came away with three turnovers as well while holding the #19 Valdosta State Blazers to 25 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Valdosta State got the ball to start the game and scored on a 1-yard rush from Eric Watts to cap the 9-play, 76-yard drive. 7-0 VSU.
  • Delta State needed just five plays to move 72 yards on their first drive, which ended in a 25-yard scoring run by Kelvin Smith. 7-7 tie.
  • VSU scored on the following drive on a Sammy Edwards 3-yard rush. 14-7 VSU.
  • The Statesmen answered on their next drive as Patrick Shegog rushed for a 1-yard score to cap an 8-play, 75-yard drive.
  • VSU punted on their next drive, but an interception by Shegog gave the Blazers the ball again. The DSU defense forced another punt, but another INT would set up a Blazer score on a 22-yard field goal. 17-14 VSU.
  • Delta State stormed down the field five plays later as KJ Smith scored again, this time from 37 yards out. 21-17 Delta State.
  • An Edwards INT gave DSU the ball back at the Blazer 13-yard line. The Statesmen made them pay on the next play as Shegog connected with Jaylen May for the score. 28-17 Delta State at the half.
  • DSU got the ball to start the third. Christian Malloy scored on the ground from 19 yards out to cap an 8-play, 75-yard drive. 35-17 Delta State.
  • Valdosta State answered on the following drive with a rushing touchdown from the DSU 16-yard line after a 7-play, 76-yard drive. Their two-point conversion was successful. 35-25 Delta State.
  • Kelvin Smith found the endzone again on the next DSU drive, this time from 7 yards out to end the 10-play, 75-yard drive. 42-25 Delta State.
  • DSU added one more score in the fourth quarter as Shegog hit Calvin Lockett in the endzone for a 9-yard score with 2:15 left in the game. 49-25 Delta State final.
OFFENSIVE NOTABLES:
  • Kelvin Smith rushed 23 times for 186 yards and three touchdowns.
  • Christian Malloy carried the ball 17 times for 116 yards and a score.
  • Patrick Shegog completed 8 of his 13 passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions.

  • Parker Burleson kicked off eight times for 482 yards with two touchbacks.
  • Nick Herber made all seven of his point-after attempts.
